I am new to owning a diesel pickup truck and just had my 15,000 mile maintenance done by a local service facility. I was surprised at the costs of the required service for my 4x4:

Oil Change with filter $77
Install fuel Filter $64
Fuel Filter $70
Service front differential $99
Service rear differential $99

They do a free tire rotation and check alignment for free. In addition we got a 15% discount this time due to a special.

My questions are:

Do these prices seem in-line?

The Dodge diesel owners guide recommends the differential service when pulling a trailer every 15K. Do you do this?

The service manager told me in the future I can being in my own oil if I can find it cheaper than $4.25 a quart. I can also bring in my own fuel filter. Any recommendation for where to buy oil and fuel filters?

Thanks for your help!

Here is one place to shop filters that I've used, mopar-wholesale.com/oemcatalog there are others.

You did OK on the oil & filter.
If he drained and refilled the differentials with Mopar 75W 90, you got a deal. The oil alone is $30 a quart retail.
He was high on the fuel filter and labor.

I go to Geno's Garage for my supplies also. The Oil and fuel filters are easy to change. That will save you a lot of $$. Also recommend a Fumoto valve to make the oil changes easier.

I'd say this:

- You did fine with the price for oil and filter.
- Learn to change the diff oil yourself, it's REALLY easy. If you can do lefty loosey, righty tighty, you can service your own diffs...and for a whole lot less than $99. They hosed you there. I certainly wouldn't bother ever servicing the front diff again for 5-10 years if you use 4x4 just occasionally.
- Same goes for the fuel filter. Very easy to change, and the one for the 5.9L is only $20 from Cummins. 5 minute job. There are videos on how to do it on the internet. The 6.7L Cummins you have may be different fuel filter wise from a 5.9L, but changing the filter is pretty easy.
- Check out Genosgarage.com or your local Cummins shop for prices on filters and such for your truck.

Geno's Garage for your RAM supplies

Good price on the oil change with filter

Really high on fuel filter & labor..........$134----yikes. Do it yourself---$43 + $7 S/H=$50

As for the differential service(s)......
front shouldn't need again for long time
rear..every 15K....do you tow full time? Check your manual for maintenance schedule for 'regular service'

The diffs use reusable gaskets from the factory. Very easy to service. Not sure on the 6.7 fuel filter cost. Oil change price isn't bad. It's about $50 for you to change engine oil.

The main problem with Dodge is that with their diesels, if you don't have the dealership do the fuel filter, I'm pretty sure that it voids the warranty on the entire fuel system. Ever pay for injectors to be replaced? You don't want to. Check for sure on this, but from what I remember walking into the service department at the one we do the paint work for, I'm thinking that was the case.

It will not void warranty. You might have a dealer pushing for service work. I do use factory filters from the dealer, and keep all receipts. I know that using some aftermarket filters that are not approved will void the warranty. They are really easy to replace.
Ask your dealer about an oil change service contract. I paid $150.00 for four oil and filter changes within two years. I used mine up before that. They have different packages, but it is a great deal. I cant change it myself any cheaper.
