Just wondering if anyone has stayed down their during last two weeks of April? Anything to do this early in the season? How is the weather typically?
We have a trip to the obx planned for July but are looking for a relatively warm weather trip to kick off the season. I'm open to other suggestions within 5-6 hours of the Philadelphia area as well! Thanks!
It's been a few years, but the OBX felt about 1/2 shut down or more the third week of April. Ft. Raleigh, the NC Aquarium there, Wright Bros memorial & museum, the ocean museum at Hatteras, and similar are all open, but a lot of the small shops are still shut. Lots to see, but not much commercial to do at that time of year, I think.

OBX is always nice. You can catch a 70 degree day in April from time to time. Water will be way too cold for swimming but sometimes an empty beach is even nicer for walking and checking things out. I love to go all the way up and drive on the beach in Corova. If you do, make sure you lower the tire pressure and don't stop in the soft sand.
If you go - Do yourself a favor and buy a nice ribeye steak at Tommy's Market in Duck. Best steak I've ever had, seriously.
We spent April 20-23 on OBX during our first ever RV trip back in 2004. A check of our pictures shows us in short sleeves. I do remember it being warm. We visited Ft. Raleigh and the Wright Brothers museum. Also enjoyed long walks on the beach.
I lived on the OBX for twelve years and one thing you can count on is not knowing what the weather will be..Some shops and some food joints won't be open, but plenty outhers will..April and May were two of my favorite months..Weather is trying to get right and no crouds..I would take OBX over VA Beach anytime...

You won't find 'beach weather' that time of year either place. Va. Beach is much more commercial, less 'charm'. OBX would be my choice. When you go, check out the Black Pelican for good food and great local atmosphere. Peanut shells on the floor in the bar area and good, I mean really good food. Prices not out of site either. Sam & Omie's for breakfast another local place you should try. Don't know where on OBX you will be camping but remember, its a very narrow, very long series of islands and small towns. Most built up around Nags Head area. Enjoy!

Go and enjoy!!
As mention both OBX and VA Beach are great destinations but both places can be a bit chilly that time of year. From Philly I would keep heading South to Myrtle Beach or Hilton Head,SC. The weather will be much warmer there in April.
If you just want to reach the beach and are not concerned with temps. Just go to OC, MD or Rehobeth,DE area. Why drive all the way to OBX or Va. beach for cold weather beach camping when you can find it much closer?
