I thought I'd start a post about the best places to camp in the midwest. We live outside of Chicago and are looking for favorites in IL or any of the surrounding states. Post pics if you have any, I'd love to see them.

A couple of our favs are:
Ludington State Park in Michigan - beautiful and SO much to do

Pines Campground at Ludington State Park

A Hike to the Dunes

Chain 'O Lakes State Park in Spring Grove, IL
We like to come here for a quick weekend, because it's so close to our house and clean. There are some nice bike trails and it is entertaining to sit down by boat docks and watch people loading and unloading. There isn't a beach though, so you need to bring a boat to enjoy the water.

Large sites with grasses and trees between provide nice privacy.

Which are your top five state parks in Missouri? We love water, beaches, nature centers, some bike riding, streams, big rocks. Thank you!

Deer Creek State park south of Columbus OH. Lots of wild life around with deer aplenty.

Clifty Falls state park in Indiana, nice trails to hike with water falls in the higher levels

Midwest has so many beautiful parks you really can't go wrong

In Michigan, I'd second Ludington State Park and add the Platte River campground in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Both can be very difficult to get into, though, as both are very, very popular. In Indiana, I'd add Turkey Run State Park to your list. Nice campground and some of the best hiking in the region, along with tubing/kayaking down the shallow river (keep forgetting the name) that runs through the park. Not far from the Chicago area being just a ways off of I-65.

My top parks in Missouri are Bennet Springs (trout fishing), Sam Baker (hiking, biking, swiming), Babler and Cuivre River (both close to home), and Mark Twain COE. In Michigan they are Ludington, Rifle River Rec Area, and Porcupine Mountains.

Nice park, no reseverations, pretty much electric only, they have two or three water hookups so you might not be close enough to use easily. We are about five miles away and it is a Vermnilion COUNTY park. Jim.
