our onan diesel gen has always run great however last fall ran fuel tank down low and eversince gen will take a long time to start will run for a while about 5min and quit. It sounded like fuel problem and I replaced all filters but now help. Could I have sluge in the tank? The mh engine runs fine. I would think if it was a fuel pump it would not even start. Any Ideas?

Mine was doing the exact same thing and it was a temp sensor. Because the sensor tells it to preheat and then it shuts down because the sensor is giving the controller an over heat fault. Do you have fault 33?

did you run fuel low, or did you run OUT? Running a diesel OUT of fuel is a bad idea. They are not like gas engines, as the fuel pump and injector(s) are at least partially lubed by fuel, and can be damaged if run dry.

When you changed the fuel filter, are you sure you got all the air out of the fuel system? The start hard, run 5 minutes, and quit, sounds like there's still air in there. It sounds like that air is preventing the fueling system from picking enough fuel up out of the tank to keep the filter full, then you get a slug of air, and it shuts down. When you changed filters, are you sure you got it back together air-tight?

Yes it did run out but we did get all the air out. It has run for up to 15min without quiting. I am getting an error message and will check it with manual to see if is temp sensor.
thanks

Sometimes the fuel line itself becomes clogged with gunk. You can remove the fuel cap and then the fuel line from the filter and blow a small burst of compressed air back into the fuel tank. Then hook it up and see if it runs better.

Thanks I will try it. Our unit sits a lot in the winter I was even considering trying to drain the tank. I do use diesel additives but wondered if I had slugg in the bottom of the tank.

I second the water temp sensor. Caused me all kinds of trouble. I also had to replace my suction hose-had to prime every time when cold. Mine is an 2005 so you might need to also.

Regardless of where the pick-up line is in the tank, gunk can accumulate in the line because the generator is not run on a very frequent basis and fuel can sit there for a long time. And in cold weather fuel can gel in the generator fuel line a lot faster than in the gas tank.

Forget about the bottom of the tank and gunk in the lines as the pickup for the generator is not at the bottome of the tank... usually 1/4 of the way from the bottom.
