Sure you can tow it with 1/2 ton pickup 5 miles. People tow trailers short distance with ATV, and those have way less tow capacity than small tractors. But you will have a hard time stopping, using only pickup brakes for this.

If the half ton is your truck then why not take this opportunity to add a brake controller and a 7 way RV connector. Transmission cooler and a decent receiver hitch If you don't have one already, and a cheap wd hitch. You can get all of these parts used off of Craigslist or eBay.

If the half ton is not yours then please don't consider it without the all the proper equipment.

Thanks

The tow truck option is good, except they'll use a specialty truck to do it and charge a lot more than $60-$70 I think. I had a boat towed a couple years ago and it cost around $175.

Another option is to just rent a truck. I'm sure there are a lot of companies around, but one I've had good luck with is United Rentals at http://www.ur.com/. Just call them, the web reservation thing sucks. If you call them, they're really friendly and will help you get the cheapest option. One time, the even recommended a competitor due to price. Good luck.

Interesting Topic.............

I would not do it however......

Where I live, the numbskulls around here would do it and if they come unstuck, would quote that good old Canadian line.....

Heck - might be a fellow RV.netter with a proper equiped truck around your area that could help you out. I'd help you if you lived near by.

Too easy to find a "buddy" or maybe do an in-town daily rental of a U-haul/Penske type truck. Not worth the liability if you're talking about moving in an urban area.

I think the tounge weight would put the front wheels of my Craftsman in the air. I guess if a guy had a wheel(s) on the hitch jack it might work. In the State of MN, it's illegal to pull a trailer with a GVWR of more than 3,000 lbs. without trailer bakes, YMMV.
That's funny, I see lots of large boats on trailers without trailer brakes. Some of the real heavy ones may have surge brakes but that's about it. I also see a lot of double axle utility trailers without any type of brake setup.

The local DMV here in southern MN gladly sold me a sticker for my boat at 3200 pounds and it has no brakes. (Thought the manual does say in MN you are suppose to have them) Quite frankly, the boat is quite heavy and I would like to have brakes but, how would you keep electric brakes working when you back into the water all the time?

That is the reason most boat trailer have surge brakes and not electric.
