2000 GMC 2500 with topper w/side opening (swing up) windows.
I would like to put a permanently mounted tool box in the back of this truck but haven't found one that will work with the canopy. I'd rather not put one across the front of the bed as the bed is only 6.5' and I will be hauling lumber with it. I've looked at one style of behind the wheel well box, but with the canopy on there it spaces the tool box out too far into the bed. It would be nice if there was a box that went along the top of the wheel well and the lid opened inwards, that way I could open the canopy window and access the tool box.
Just wondering if anybody has a bed mounted tool box along with a topper/canopy?

Thanks

ARE makes a topper with a built in tool box along the side but that won't help if you want to keep your current topper.

I built one at home starting with large pieces of cardboard to get the sizes right.
Then I laid all the cut pieces of cardboard onto the 1/2" wood I was going to use.
After all the parts were cut I did a pre assemble to check everything out.
Then I glued, screwed and stained it all and 2 days later slid it into the truck and it stayed in the back of the truck for 5 years.
Then I sold the truck and the toolbox went with it.
I had made it to fit the contours of the truck bed, curves and all.
Good Luck & drive Safe!

Just a thought to look at things differently.
Bed Slide
They have redesigned this since my purchase.
It is rare that I climb up in the back unless I'm hooked up to the trailer and have to get something out.
Also I use stackable, plastic tubs for the RV stuff.
Including tools.

I made my own for around $100.00. Works good for 4-500lbs. I put my bikes and other camping gear on it. Hardley ever climb inside the bed anymore.
Here it is on my 2010 F150.

Here it is on my 08 F150.

You could put some crates on it and easily slide them out to access your tools.

I had a plastic one from K mart in my old F250 with a cover on it. It was one that was supposed to sit on the bed floor, I still wanted the 8ft length for lumber plywood etc, so I tool so of the "holy steel" we used to call it dexion and bolted it to the sides to hold it up off the bed floor. Drove like that till I sold the truck. Now its mounted to the bumper of my TT so I can carry all the misc stuff for blocking and hoses etc. I have seen them made from aluminum at lowes, home depot etc and you could do the same thing if so inclined. Mine had the 2 doors on top but a single door is available and would probably be better.

Dale, did you take any pictures while you were building this. It sure does look professionally manufactured complete with the machinery grey paint. I have been considering making one but even my best plans don't compare to yours. Great Work. I was thinking about using garage door channel and rollers. Yours seems to have a very close fit.
