Just read an article in the Family Motor Coaching (March 2012) by Brett Wolfe about the Allison Transmissions. The core of the article has to do with using the Econ mode 99% of the time even in hills (a discussion for another thread) but the closing discussion about the Load Based Shift Scheduled really caught my attention.
Anyone know about this? It became available in 2010 and is a calibration feature so older 1000 thru 4000 units can be upgraded. Is this a worthwild upgrade, cost? Driving changes, MPG Changes... Any info?
I submitted my article to Allison for review and they wrote that section. I know nothing about that feature or whether it is retro-upgradable. I have not driven or looked into the 2010 models.
If you find out in what way the 2010 and newer transmissions with "Load Based Shift Scheduled" perform compared with previous transmissions, please post the answer.
GA Brett, Thanks for the response, and thanks for the article, a good read. For the record, I leave my trans in ECON until I hit major hills, then I turn it off... at least I use to. I also manually downshift based on engine parameters, temp being the major.
While I will call Allison, I am hoping to hear from any of the members here as well. So keep watching this thread and hopefully we will all have a good answer.
I'll be taking mine into Allison to have the Jake brake defaults reprogramed and also will ask them about this. I have a 4060 tranny and wouldn't be surprised it it's possible.
