I have an Iphone 4s with hotspot. It works fine when I connect with usb, but my laptop doesn't recognize it as a wifi connection available. Do I need to do something so it is recognized? The manual says select iphone, which I do not see. Running windows XP. Looked in Macrumors and didn't see how to set up on windows. What am I doing wrong?

same problem with me and my iPhone4 and my WinXP laptop. i spent a good amount of time on the phone with a verizon tech...a real tech, not front line customer support...about this problem. the long and short of it is that the intel wifi card in the laptop is not able to communicate with the wifi chip in the phone...the laptop card is too old. i'm able to use my external wifi adapters with the iphone, just not the built-in card in the laptop. i normally tether the iphone to the laptop using the USB cable. that's the fastest connection anyway.

mine is but the VZW tech told me that the firmware in my Intel card (Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Card) is out of date. i might be able to update the card but i might end up turning into a brick...i've never had much luck updating firmware. another solution would be to just replace the card but i'll be replacing the entire laptop in the not too distant future. so for now i'm content to tether the iphone via USB cable.
to the original poster...if that's your problem and you want to try updating the firmware/drivers, the intel link is here.
good luck to you.

it's probably the firmware/drivers for your wifi card. mine is an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG. they *can* be updated (i sent you a link in a previous message). i've never had much luck with those types of upgrades and as i'm replacing the laptop in the near future and i can still tether via cable or bluetooth it's not a priority for me.

Thanks, the laptop is about 4-5 yrs old. Didn't think about it being it being to old. Will just live with plug in until time to buy new computer.
