We will stay at a Pemex, cuota booth or maybe a Shopping Center. We stayed at a nice big Sorianna parking lot last night in Leon.
We are at the Hotel Medrano tonight- we are the only ones here and what a beautiful setting right next to the garden. we have full hook up with magic WIFI in the rig. for $200!!
I think we will make it two days here.
About the brakes - no problems for me the gear down guy. Just take it easy!!
From my recent map I only see about 75 km of windy road. So it takes 2.5 hrs - I am retired and need the upper body exercise!!

Durango to Villa Union may not be that many miles, but it takes forever to drive that distance. I do the trip in 8 hours, leaving Durango about 3AM (you miss all the slow truck traffic) and get to Villa Union about noon. That's towing a 27 foot travel trailer.
The first time we did it in 1998 we left Durango at 3PM, thinking we could make it to Mazatlan by dark.... It got dark long before we were out of the mountains.
It's a real adventure. After driving 3,000 miles on super slabs, it's always an inviting change of routine.
Don't be surprised if your hands feel like you're going to get a blister from all that steering wheel turning.

All of the feedback is coming to roast! I guess maybe not a good idea this year. the alternate is to head to Chihuahua then is it advisable to go into USA at Juarez or take the route via mex 10 to Douglas? I am thinking that avoiding Juarez might be a good idea?

I read the Juarez paper on a two or three times a week basis. The violence in Juarez is about half of what it was a year ago, BUT it is still FREAKIN high. I would have some planning and preparation involved in that trip, back up plans in case of a breakdown, phone numbers etc.
Good luck and keep us informed.

The advantage of the better roads through Juarez does not out weigh the security risk so we will take the by pass route and yes we will have back up plans. I have an electronic Dog which we have ready to turn on as soon as stopped. It really sounds authentic and we have a Pelligroso perro sign on the side of rig. We haven't been stopped yet but turn it on when we leave the rig in a parking lot and it is motion sensitive, so if you come up to the door it barks. here is the website where I bought it. Guard Dog !

Lew,
If you decide to go up towards Juarez through Chihuahua you can cut to the NW near Los Sauces on a new cuota that angles up toward Nuevo Casas Grande. The cuota maybe number 7 or 780 and runs into/joins 10 and then up to 2 and over to Agua Prieta/Douglas. We have gone this way and had no problems. Less than 25 miles south of Nuevo Casas Grande is Mata Ortiz where you can find some of the most amazing pottery you will ever see – and meet the wonderful people who live there. There is a new easy road that is quick and easy to Mata Ortiz. Look all this up. It is worth it.

X2 for Mata Ortiz. We bought some beautiful pottery there and later found similar works by the same artist in Arizona for more than ten times the price.
We did have a little trouble finding the banjercito to turn in the TIP and FMTs but managed eventually by backing out of the line up for the border crossing and making an umptiump point turn with the DP after disconnecting the toad!

We have an actual 75 lb black dog who likes to sit in the driver's seat and watch everyone and everything - works quite well.

Brian-Do you know the condition of Highway 2 from Janos to Agua Prieta? We went across that section about 5 years ago....it was in really bad shape at that time.
