Greetings again!

My previous posts regarding the Excursion 6.0 have been very helpful in deciding either for or against it.

On another note, I found an 07 Expedition XL, 5.4l, 6 speed auto, 3.73 rear and heavy duty trailer package. My questions to all of you are:

1) How do you like it?
2) What do you tow with yours?
3) Dependability?
4) Fuel mileage towing/not towing?
5) What does Ford include with the heavy duty trailer package?

Thanks all........

I researched them but never test drove one. Check the payload (yellow Tire and loading sticker on the driver's door) and the receiver ratings. I do not think it is over 950 pounds with WD.

It should be good for up to about 7000 pounds loaded TT. Budget for 8mpg towing with any gas engine; you might get up to 10mpg, but budget 8. The 3V 5.4L and 6-spd trans have been quite reliable.

The Expedition (I'm a previous owner of an '03) is not the Excursion. When Ford phased out the Excusrion in '05 the Expy. XL was Ford's answer....... But when you looked closely at the 2, you'll see quickly you're not comparing apples to apples. The Excusrion was "all business" the Expy not so much.

OP I'm not sure what you're planning to tow, but I just hope you don't think an '07 Expy is an equal trade-off for an '05 Excursion PSD. Not withstanding the concerns many have with the 6.0 L, it's more TV than an Expy.

Good luck.

Can't speak for the EX but I have a 2010 F150 5.4, 3.73's 6spd. I had a an 08 same truck, and the new 6sp really livens up the 5.4. We tow a 7200lb TT with very little trouble. High ELs like 6000' and above suck some power from it. But unless you live at that El you would be fine. 8.5 towing. 18 empty.

I realize I'm not comparing apples to apples, basically the reason that the Excursion is not on the table anymore is merely the fact that there are not many low milage, well taken care of Excursions within 100 miles of Bridgeport WV.....I really want the 7.3......On the other hand, the Expy EL's are pretty common and fairly affordable. MPG is really of no concern....the Expy will be replacing an 05 Chevy Avalanche. We've recently adopted our second Greyhound and require the cargo space of an SUV.

My 2008 Jayco 27BH Jayflight G2, should not be a problem for the Expy as it has the 3.73 rear and my Avalanche only has the 3.42's....a real struggle here in the mountains of WV.

Keep the replies coming....

I've had my 2004 Expy (slightly less hp and torque than the 07) for a few years now and haven't had any trouble with it (it's at 98,000 miles). Things that bug me about the Expy: No built-in tow mirrors available, no tuner for my model year 5.4l, and no air bags (coil over shock).

Overall, it's been a good vehicle but I have to be very patient when going uphill.

Gotcha . The only thing I will mention is the Expedition will have a tongue weight limitation of around 900 lbs. Most Ford sales guys won't know about it and will keep going back to the 9000 lb. (ish) tow rating but it IS there in the owner's manual. We found towing a 30' + TT it was a constant struggle to keep that tongue weight down under 900 lbs. and also keeping under the 4100 lbn. RAWR on the Expy.

I dont think my 27BH is anywhere near 7000lbs loaded.....we just don't take that much stuff.....on the other hand the 27BH is for sale. We're going to downsize in length for a Shamrock/Roo 21SS to get a slide out.....weight will not be an issue once the Jayco sells.

Thanks......

As others have said, hitch and payload are your real limitations. NADA says that trailer is 4,900 dry. If that's accurate, you should be able to stay under your 900 pound hitch weight without too much trouble. That said, the remaining question is payload. Check the sticker, it very well may read 1,300-1,400 pounds of payload. You are going to use 800-900 pounds of that on tongue weight and the weight of the WD hitch itself. That leaves 500 pounds, or so, for passengers, dogs, and gear in the Expy. Only you can figure out whether or not that meets your needs.

We spent 2 years researching this, and always figured that an Expy would have us maxed out at a trailer about the size you are towing. We knew we'd have to be careful on loading (we have 3 kids), but we figured we could do it. In the end, we didn't want to have to deal with those limitations, so I dealt with the extra distance involved in getting one and bought a 3/4 ton Suburban instead.

Whatever you decide, congratulations on doing your homework first, and good luck!

I'm thinking the same thing as APT. If you're at 7000 lbs or under your should be fine. We used to have a 2007 6.0 1/2 ton 4.10 Suburban and pulled a similar configuration (Four Winds 28G) for a year or so. It handled it very well, loaded at about 6800 lb.
