We went from a 30' Avion TT to a 32' (32'9") Avion TT towing both with a 2500 Suburban and never noticed any difference. Longer trailers are easier to back up IMO. We also had an Equalizer Hitch with sway bars and never had any problems with sway.

Enjoy and don't worry.

I'm 1yr into "camping" and we had a trail lite bantam b19 19' towed with a toytota sienna( maxed out tongue and pull weight). Used a Blue Ox wd with built in sway cntrl. Picked up the trailer we towed it with just a hich and sway bar 70 miles no problem. Definitly new it was attached. The rear saged 3" on the van. After the Wd was added it was a noticable difference in the tv, as it handled better. Breaking was not the issue the trailer has breaks and had the latest prodigy cntrlr. I felt more in control of the load.

Now i sold that and on the same day bought a 33' 2009 springdale 298bhssr, used 1 season by the previous owner still has the new smell and little rubber fingets on the tires(like when you get new tires). We also bought, new to us, 2004 3500 chevy 4x4 ext cab long bed(8') 6.0 gasser with 4:10 gears tv.

Question: Can I use my Blue Ox WD rated at 500lbs (more for sway cntrl) or should i upgrade to a wd with 1200 lbs or more? Trailer is 9500lbs fully loaded aprx 1000 to 1200lbs tongue load?

You should not use a WD rated for 500 lbs. if your trailer tongue wt. is 1000-1200 lbs., that should be obvious.

You would know that it is set up "wrong" if you did not follow the manufacturer's instructions. That is what they do, ENGINEER a hitch system. Anyone that tells you to do it differently than the INSTRUCTIONS is giving BAD advice! JMHO, but why else would the Manufacturer employ ENGINEERS?

I did not set mine up, the RV center did when I bought the hitch and trailer so hopefully they did it correctly.

I have lots of experience towing various trailers, but never a travel trailer over 24 ft. We are considering buying one in the range of 33 ft from tongue to bumper.

I am interested in hearing from others just what to expect when towing such a long trailer with my 04 Shorty 6.0 TD. From a combined hauling and towing weight perspective the truck will not be overloaded. And I will be using an Equalizer Hitch.

But I am wondering how different the handling etc might be from towing the 24 footer. Will the larger trailer pull the truck around, etc?

Will appreciate any comments from others who have experience with this senario.

With that truck I doubt you would even know the trailer was back there. I towed a 32 footer with a Dodge and GMC 2500 with no issues.

How can a dealer set up the hitch correctly unless the trailer and the tow vehicle are loaded for camping? For a dealer to set up a trailer with nothing in it will obviously need to be readjusted later when loaded for camping.

It will be of value to learn how to set up the hitch for yourself to make sure it is 'just right'.

I'm on my first TT, it is 35' overall. My only other towing experience has been with a 18' boat trailer. I wouldn't give the size a second thought.

I tow our 31ft TT (35 overall) with a crew cab short bed with no issues. W/D with anti sway, almost like its not there.

Well lets see, how can they do it, they get out their big wrenches and air tools and put all the pieces together, they do hundreds a year so they probably have a clue. I Do not happen to have any air tools so it would be tough to do.

they may do hundreds, but in my experience, they seldom do a good setup and adjustment. I've seen and helped many friends and neighbors with towing problems related to poorly adjusted WD systems. We've yet to come across one adjusted even close to optimal from a dealer, mine included. In every case they had way to little bar tension for the load, resulting in nothing close proper setup. In two cases with the trailer on the tow vehicle ball, no jack, you could snap up the brackets w/o the cheater bar. Now tell me that WD setup was doing anything!! And the dealer said "just use the airbags to level the truck". right!!!

Not to say there aren't dealers that do a good setup job, but I haven't seen one. anyone on this board seen a good dealer WD setup job?? speak up PLEASE. I'd like to see at least ONE!!
