Yesterday my DW got a text message saying she had won a $1000 gift card from Walmart. Since she had NOT entered any such contest, she was very skeptical about it. It said to text a number in area code 202 which is in Washington, D.C. That made me apprehensive, as Walmart is HQ'd in Arkansas and D.C. isn't known as a business center. This a.m. she called two Walmart stores in our area and both managers said it was a scam. They both said they had gotten lots of calls about it and it APPEARS that the customer list from the pharmacy had been broken into and those were the people being sent the phony messages. That is all we know now, but it has been reported to several gov't. entities for investigation. BE CAREFUL.
Quite honestly, if someone isn't leary over a text saying they won a $1,000 giftcard...well, let's say they should be. That should raise red flags to even the most naive.
If something is too good to be true, most likely it is.
I get those text messages all the time, mostly $100.00 gift cards. I just delete them. After all, how can you win something if you never even enter your info. SCAM

Years and years ago, the biggest scam you worried about came from the Carnival when it came to town.
Today, we are subjected to the potential of a scam, big time scams, every time we open the mail or turn on a computer.
One has to wonder if it will ever get better or only worse. I'm afraid we know the answer.....its going to get worse, much worse and the scammers are getting better and better at their scams.

The "Scam" is that in order to get your 1,000 gift card you have to "participate" by taking advantage of so many Silver offers, and so many gold offers.. Now these are legit offers to sell you stuff.. I'm not sure how good the prices are because I'm not interested but for the kilo-buck card you may need to buy over a dozen things each costing in the 200-500 range or more.
Completely illegal by the way... IF it says YOU WON it means no purchase is necessary.. but I get those dang near every day, plus they show up on many of the ad-supported web sites I visit.. NOTE: This is an ad supported web site, THough I've never seen that one here.

I don't think scammers are necessarily getting better, they just have more avenues to hook a person. The the sweet fruit of easy money has always been and will continue to be a powerful lure.
One of these days there will be a News Story about the guy that didn't claim his winnings..........that would be me.
Almost everything sent via e-mail goes to SPAM File and then I trash it without even looking.
Text......don't know if my phone can, I know I can't/don't with it.
One of these days........Winner and I won't even know
It's easy to scam someone looking to get something for nothing. that kind of scam should NEVER work, but unfortunately the sometimes do. by the way, I'm a 25 time winner of the Ethopian lottery (which I never entered) and I've also won DOZENS of dell lap tops (if I wasn't too lazy to go and pick them up).
