Yes there is such a DOT law. But it's only for commercial vehicles, not for RV's. When we do trailer tow testing for any vehicle that has a GCWR over 10K we must be DOT compliant. So even a little ole Jeep Grand Cherokee trailer tow test requires inspections, log books, etc....

As far as I know, that is for commercial vehicles. I have several company vans/trucks...one of which is a cube over that weight....got hit with a ticket 2 years ago for no DOT numbers....Just to be clear...commercial meaning that if the TOW vehicle has advertising on it...you will be checked, even pulling a TT.

If you don't have commercial plates DOT doesn't have anything to do with an RV

State of CA limits towing a travel trailer to a GVWR of 10,000 lbs and a 5th wheel is limited to a GVWR of 15,000 lbs with a Basic class C license when towing is not for compensation. Trailers and 5th wheels exceeding the above mentioned GVWR's require a Noncommercial Class A License. Also A driver must have a fifth-wheel recreational trailer endorsement added to his/her Class C driver license to pull a fifth-wheel recreational trailer over 10,000 lbs., but not over 15,000 lbs. GVWR, which is not used for hire. This endorsement is not required if the driver has a commercial or noncommercial Class A driver license.

State governments will be the governing agency for non commercial vehicles.

Nope, DOT requirements are strictly commercial, privately operated RVs are exempt. Depending on the state and weight you may need a different class of license instead of a normal operators license.

BTW we weigh 38,000 lbs, no DOT ID of any kind and we do not stop at scales.
