Maybe your latest backup file is 200 GB or more? This can happen with a bunch of pictures that can be 2-3 MB each these days.
You might want to look at a new 1 TB (1,000 GB or 1,000,000 Megabytes!) back up drives, and keep the old one so if the new hard drive ever crashes, you will have a back up plan for the back up!
Fry's electronics sells a 1TB drive for about $130.
After you delete the files you want to, don't forget to "empty trash". Deleted files remain on your hard drive until the trash can is emptied.

wdwindows tool
dmailer sync
dmailer sync v9

I decided not to get an external hard drive for backups for several reasons, one of which is discussed above - it fills up. I full time and I didn't feel having my backup onboard all the time was safe either. Remember to do a backup on a regular basis is a pain.
So I use an online backup service. It solves all of the problems above and my data is available via the web anytime and from any pc.
