Calling all Hill Country natives. Need some help. Anyone know of the possibility of towing a 5th wheel on Ranch Road 337 from Medina to Vanderpool and then RR 1050 from Utopia to Rio Frio?

Did that a couple of years ago,, it's an OK road, narrow back country roads, both of them, lots of curves and hills. Go slow and be careful. Both were in pretty good shape then.

The road in that area you don't want to take is Rt. 16 south out of Kerrville. That's where the switch backs are, over Medina Mt. We live about 3 miles south of there and drive it several times a week. We won't pull our 29.5 5er over Medina Mt..always go out thru Medina on 2828 to 173 when we leave.

I have driven these roads thousands of times. Like to take friends on day trips over to Utopia.
I would not pull over 337. The roads are very narrow lots of curves. This is a very scenic drive.

Just take 470(Just out of Bandara) to Utopia then on down 1050.
Not that far between the two roads. 470 is much flater and no curves. Not as scenic but much better for pulling a trailer.
1050 is an easy drive or pull over to Rio Frio.

Thanks guys,
I have driven the hills without the trailer, but couldn't remember all of them. Going from Medina to Mager's Crossing, I was looking for something. The hills and grades aren't a problem but I do know there are some switchbacks on some of those narrow roads. I do remember you wouldn't want to take 337 from Vanderpool to Leakey or over to Camp Wood.
Never have driven 470, but that sounds like the route to take to Utopia.

Make sure you keep you keep your tank full of fuel and don't pass up any gas stations. Go slow and watch out for deer crossing the roads.

Haha!! We pulled our 40 footer through there going to Lost Maples, and it is pretty hairy in places!! Needless to say, when we left LM, we went through Ingram!!

We're actually going back to LM next week for spring break. Can't wait!!

Love the Texas Hill Country!!

I just arrived a few minutes ago in Medina and came on the 173/2828 route.

Of course my driving habits may have a lot to do with the route. I don't mind going 45 or 50. I'm retired and not in a hurry.
