I was responding to gotsmart's comment that he was waiting for an LTE only phone. If it were LTE only, it would not be backward compatible.

For data purposes I'm trying to sort all this out as an RVer. For RVers LTE is pretty much a non-factor right now since it is only in large metro areas where wifi availability is ubiquitous anyway. I access cellular data very little when I am at home. The terms 3G and 4G are somewhat ambiguous since the cellular companies run separate systems. AT&T's 4G formerly known as 3G was always quite a bit faster as much as 3X than Verizon or Sprint 3G.
I'm more concerned about hotspotting a device. I gave up on VirginMobile (Sprint) Mifi. It proved to be worthless to me most all of last year where we traveled. Verizon definitely had the best 3G coverage for RVers. So, thinking seriously about what New iPad I want, Verizon or AT&T LTE. Information is vague right now. Verizon has announced hotspotting. AT&T hasn't said yet. AT&T will drop down to its 3G where LTE is unavailable. On initial reads I have read that Verizon will go past their 3G and drop all the way down to EVdo (2G) outside of LTE areas. If that is true then it would be worthless to an RVer, IMO. They don't make it easy for us.

Just tried a speed test again: 4-6m down and 800k up. 2 other non-4S phones at the table can't get beyond 1.3

Read the upgrade agreement ..it's just a name change nothing different in the phone .. The 4s has always been able to use hspa+
Hspa+ is a form of the old 3G gsm that's speeded up and is near the same speed as Verizon's LTE and AT&T new LTE . True 4g doesn't exist in the US .. They are all lying about the 4g nobody gets the 100 mgbt/s that 4g specifys and there is no standard .. It's all phone company marketing but who cares .. Is your phone fast enough to do what you want ?? If you really had 100mgbts you'd blow your data cap in minutes if not seconds !
My post's are my opinion The advice, comments etc are free and worth what you paid

Now it's just like my Droid. It has always said 4g no matter if I'm on 4g or 3.

Without arguing semantics of what is and isn't 4G, here is a test from the office. This is way faster than any 3G I've seen on this phone.
