For those that tend to use / really appreciate their Android's GPS you might consider donating/downloading the app ($2.86) named "GPS Status" found here. If you don't mind ads there is a free version also. Read the blue text below for full list of what it offers!
While GPS Status does report status and is visually nifty lets say it does have a feature that is a major plus and will in fact make you GPS perform at its optimum. The plus as I call it is the apps ability to "reset" the GPS and to download 'GPS assistance data" that is up to the minute current. Doing a reset and then the download will speed up your GPS fixes immensely.. You would do this reset / download say the morning of a trip...
IF you install this app, open GPS Status, press your phones Menu button and then go to Tools. There you will see "Manage A-GPS State" and under this you will see reset and download.
What GPS Status offers:
Displays your GPS and sensor data: position and signal strength of satellites, accuracy, speed, acceleration, altitude, bearing, pitch, roll and battery state.
Tools included: compass with magnetic and true north, leveling tool, mark or share your location and navigate back later.
Keep your GPS fast: reset it or download A-GPS data regularly for faster fixes.

Thanks for this tip. My husband and I both downloaded the free version. It really helped my husbands Droid X. We use Endomondo app every morning when we walk. It calculates time, length, elevation gain. My Droid Razr picks up the satellites in a couple of seconds, his older phone is very slow to find the satellites. Sometimes he has to turn in off and on to get the fix. Now it picks them up very fast. He is very happy!!

Wonder if a new ROM would fix this... I rooted/re-ROMmed my HTC Inspire 4G (almost identical to the Desire) and running CM7 without issue with the GPS.
