7 million tires recalled in 1978, then 6.5 million recalled in 2000.
Those are the two largest tire recalls in history. Both involve cover ups and finger pointing.
Firestone is on my lifetime never buy list.
I have Firestone Destination A/T's on my Truck, 265/70R16. 50k mile warranty. I'm at 48k and should get at least another 5k-8k based on the wear. These are one of the first sets of tires to actually get to the warranty. I'd buy these again. They are also #1 on TireRack.com's customer survey for this size/type.
My Subaru has Bridgestone Turanza Serenity tires and those are a great preformance tire (98H). They are 2nd place for tires on that car, unfortunatly the first place are no longer manufacturered. Those were the Firestone Wilderness designed for the Subaru line. When Subaru changed from 16" rims, Firestone discontinued them.
I've always had excellent service at the Firestone shops. They have a nation-wide road hazard coverage, unlike others.

I can't say much about the '78 recall, but the 2000 recalls were driven in part because of the auto manufacturer underinflating the tires. Seriously, 23 pounds in an SUV tire? Ford is on my lifetime never buy list for a variety of reasons.

I run Michelins on my vehicles now and have run Toyos in the past and have been happy with both. Firestone came off my list a few years ago when one of their stores tried to pull the "you need new brakes, this is a death-trap and I wouldn't drive it another inch" scam on my wife when she heard a strange noise and pulled into their store to get it looked at. We complained to the store manager and corporate with no results.
I ran Generals once and didn't get good life out of them. I've never tried Coopers or Goodyears.
Well I ended up getting the Firestones, although I too still am ticked that they had so many tire problems before. That is almost like the GM bail-out, I swear I won't get another one of those too, but sometimes time and the economy changes your plans. Gary
I owned a set of Firestones on my Explorer that were recalled. Never had any problems with them but I always ran them at higher pressure than the door sticker said. I lay blame for those problems at Ford for running them at low pressure. They were out to get a smooth ride and created a safety issue in my opinion. Firestone makes good tires and many others do as well. I've always regarded Michelin as the best, but they're expensive too, so much so that I rarely buy them any more.
For me it's not about always having the best, it's about always getting good value for my hard earned money. That applies to much more than just tires too.
I have Michelin LTX m/s2 on my F150 and Michelin Latitude Tour on the Esacpe. Both just received top rating in latest Consumers Reports (Apr 12) for truck & SUV tires. The last set of LTX m/s I had on the F150 went 72,000 miles which I felt was great on a 4wd vehicle. Always had good luck with Michelins even in the larger truck (22.5 inch) truck sizes.
