I have read numerous complaints about this model year in tank fuel pump, They have a tendencey to stop working.. Does anyone have one that they have never had problems with or know anyone who hasnt had a problem ? My Damon was bought when it was 15 years old (from dealer) so I cant get in contact with previous 2 owners, (who by the way appeared to have taken excellent care of this coach) to find out if they ever replaced it. The 460 engine runs like a new one. It has 37,000 mi on it and so far no problem, Just asking if these pumps are a sure thing to go when least expected...

My fuel pump failed in 1992 at 16,000 miles. The replacement (Ford) has run fine for the last 20 years. Mine gave warning signs of the idle surging on start up and running rough as if I had gotten bad fuel. Every so often, I will listen to the pump. If you notice a change in pitch at idle, then I would be very observant of how the engine is running. Personally, I don't think everyone needs to change out their fuel pumps. Several people feel keeping the tank above 1/2 will keep the pump cool and prolong its' life.

Ford installed the improved style fuel pump in F53 production built after 6/30/97.
Ford Tech. Service Bulletin No. 97-23-9 provides the part numbers required to install the new style Pump/Sender in F53 Fords built before 7/97.

A service manager at a Ford truck center told me this. The original pump was ok for the chassis when it was a short fuel line from the tank to the engine. Then they kept stretching the chassis and the pump couldn't keep the pressure high enough. The engine and ECU expects to see the PSI in the high 30's. If it drops below 32 PSI or so, the ECU goes wacky. When they put a guage on mine, it was in the low thirties. When its hot and you are going up a mountain at wide open throttle, it couldn't deliver in my 35' coach.
So you should be able to have a mechanic either put a guage on the fuel line near the engine and check it (under full load hot). I think the later OBDIs reported fuel pressure PSI.
My Kharma ran over my Dogma.

Our 1995 went out at 45K. I suggest finding a good time to replace it because if it has not been replaced before you will be replacing it soon

1995 Ford F53 35'Bounder
1999 Bought New Style Fuel Pump/Sender - (kept it in a luggage compartment)
Drove to Alaska 2 times and Nova Scotia once (slight vapor lock)
2007 50,000 miles (Vapor lock worse (change fuel pump/sender myself)
2009 70,000 miles (West Coast and the highest passes [10%] I could find and did not disconnect the toad)[no problems](Next time I'll disconnect the toad on 10%grade to help the engine and transmission live longer)

The original on ours was replaced at about 75k miles. The current pump has 132,000 miles on. Drive yours often so the seals don't break down and it should give you good service for a long time.
