We are camping WAY off the grid and our backup generator is failing us! It will run fine for about 20 minutes and then it starts idling up and down and up and down, then shuts off. After it fully cools down, it will run again, but after 20 minutes, does the Mae thing again.

Oil is fine. Seems to do it when it gets warmed up.

What could it be?

Try applying the choke halfway, they get finicky when the carb gets a little dirty.

Make sure that the knob on top of the gas tank is on. If it's off it will cut out in 15 to 20 min.

Agree...For some reason the vent on the gas cap may either be plugged or not in the run position. Your problem as you describe it is what happens when the gas tank is not vented.

Try running it with the gascap open slightly and see if it stays running. If it does, the gascap is not venting.

Just had a similar problem here. Would run for for 15 seconds to a few minutes and shut down (without surging). Sometime it starts back up, sometimes not (no spark). Traced it to a faulty ignition coil with the multi meter. Yours surges before shutting down so it sounds fuel related. I've forgot to open the vent and it does that.

Good luck and let us know what the fix is.

I say it is the hidden pilot jet that is clogged. Very common problem that is over looked by most people that clean out carb.
Could also be dirt in bottom of tank or fuel line partial clog and after setting a few minutes the fuel bowl gets refilled until you run it again

I too would check the cap vent. If it will run for 20 minutes, I think I would run some carb cleaner through it too.

Whatever the problem is, it sounds simple.
