My 08 F350 KR is sitting at the local Ford dealer. I bought it used with 80K miles. I now has 96,500 miles on it. The engine is under warranty until 100K.
I took it in because it has smoked out the street a few times. It
doesn't do it often, but every now and then it does. Fortunately it
did it for the mechanic at the dealer.
It was also gutless and a pig on fuel. It was also at the dealer for an EGR problem (covered under warranty) about a month ago.
They pulled the secondary fuel filter after the high pressure pump and
found metal shavings. The high pressure fuel pump is shot. The
injectors are also now all shot.
At this point I have a decision to make.
I can pay them 12 hours of labour (at over $100 per hour) to pull the cab
and pull the high pressure fuel pump. When they pull the high
pressure pump, they take it apart and check for rust. If there is
rust, Ford claims there was water in the fuel at some point and denies
all warranty. If they don't find any rust in the pump, they will fix
everything.
It costs over $10K to replace the high pressure pump and all the injectors.
I can no longer drive the truck as it is because if an injector
sticks, it will melt a piston in the engine. I'm probably lucky it
hasn't already.
This dealer has 3 6.4L diesel trucks in their shop right now with the
same problem. One blew the engine. One had no rust. One had rust.
1 in 3 of these trucks is going to get warranty, the other two
truck owners are going to get big bills.

I wonder what the trade in value would be fixed or broken? Sounds like you are rather disappointed with the rig. Might be time to find something else cutting your losses.

Have them contact your comprehensive insurance carrier immediately.
Do you have receipts for all the fuel you bought lately?
Comp. insurance coverage, if you have it, covers this kind of stuff.

sorry to hear it, did the smoking start after a reflash? its a common problem, are you very confident in your dealers mechanics? I sometimes find they are not as knowledgeable as they should be.

Luckily I bought a Cummins 6.7 to swap into it the same day I bought the truck. I'll put it in later this month.

I'm not the original owner so there is no way to prove that the "water damage" wasn't pre existing.

The service writer and mechanics at this dealership are excellent. They tell it exactly like it is. They are very experienced with this situation and there is nothing they can do to help the customer.
It smoked the first time about 2 weeks after I bought it. Its only done it about 10x in the 15,000 miles I put on it.
Other than being a pig on fuel and a bit gutless, it runs great. You'd never know there was anything wrong except every now and then an injector sticks and it smokes.

I've followed that thread from time to time. I knew that the 6.4 was prone to such failings when I bought the truck.
Its one of those things though that you always expect to happen to someone else.
I've had a diesel truck for 13 years and never had a lick of trouble with the fuel system. And now this.
And the price tag on the fix is outrageous. And there is no alternative to getting Ford parts to fix it. And there is no guarantee it won't happen again.
At least I have a backup plan, almost ready to go. Ie, Cummins 6.7 swap.

Ford knows they have a problem and there have been a number of post on the dieselstop forum. They have been denying responsibility in most cases. You should do some reading and then make an informed decision.
