Okay. I bought a Skyline Mountain View Retro 140 travel trailer two weeks ago. I absolutely love it. But, something happened today that has me thinking I am doing something wrong. The trailer sits pretty low to the ground. As I was pulling out of a parking lot, the rear end scraped a tiny bit as it reached the little ramp. I don't want to be afraid of that kind of thing. Is there some special way, other than just taking it slow, that I should do to prevent the scraping? Or, is it just something that is going to happen at times?

Approach them at an angle if possible. Try to avoid them when possible. I have driven past many a gas station that had a sharp driveway entrance.

Wow.. Really? Wheels? I would have never in a million years thought that would be the answer. Thanks, ya'll. I'm on it!!!!!!!

In the meantime (spring break trip tomorrow), I'll try approaching from an angle, IF I have to use one.

If this continues to become an issue you could install 'training wheels' on the back frame.

Actually, swivel wheels and rear skid wheels were blamed for a series of bent and damaged RV frames a few years back. The frames are minimally engineered and built with very little reserve...so rear skid wheels were causing bent frames and broken frame welds.

The best solution is to raise the RV a bit...some brands have spring hanger shackles that can be adjusted for additional height. 4" to 6". They're called Jake Plates. Or you can try a shop that can weld a plate to do the same thing, or "flip the axles".

Just keep in mind the skid wheels are potentially a bad thing. Get some estimates from a weld shop that does this kind of work.

By the way, usually any modifications to the frame will void the frame warranty.

My posts shouldn't be taken for factual data. They are purely fictional, for entertainment purposes and should not be constituted as actually related to scientific, technical, engineering, legal, spiritual or practical advice. Amen.

Very true but the going out of a parking lot or out of a driveway should not be a problem with 'training wheels'.

I don't think the OP is talking about big ditches.

With my TH and the low rear for the big tailgate door,I dig gouges in the pavement. But it's just frame back there,no fiberglass.

I would flip the axles too! Be amazed at how much clearance you'll get.
