I just had the third transfer switch in a year go out on our MH. We are in Daytona and I've called a mobile service who said he can come out today. He and my dealer both told me the ones they put in are junk, so why do they put them in??

Has anyone ever used Atlantic mobile RV service in Daytona? Man's name is Tim

Can I assume that you shut off the AC draws befor you transfer. Is arcing of contacts the problem? I have not had that problem occur yet, had many others though. Good luck with the new one.

Hi,

Why not just go to a manual system of plugs?

Yes, I shut off everything when changing from one power source to another, after my first one, my dealer said to make sure and do that.

If you have the time order one of these:
http://www.escousa.net/Merchant2/merchant.mv?&Screen=PROD&Store_Code=E&Product_Code=ES50M-65N&Category_Code=EP5

They also have this model with a surge protection device added but it is much more expensive. My coach is an '03 and I full time. I'm also pretty cavalier about turning off loads before switching and the transfer switch has been trouble free.

If I had that much trouble with a switch I would assume the switch was under rated for the job it was to preform. Easy fix. Install a relay and let the switch operate the relay.

I'm wondering if the RV approved ones are of the same quality as the ones used in stick house back up generator systems. I think that sometimes the RV approved products are less than! Just thinking out loud.

I know Tim. He knows what he is doing. I think he has done this kind of work over 30 years.

Probably since copper is so expensive right now, many manufacturers of coils are under turning them. This causes excess heat in the coil and body of the transfer switch. Add that to the ambient heat in a small enclosure many transfer switches are install inside and I can see how there might be repetitive failures.

There's a range of the number of turns that will cause the correct force to close the contacts and they're probably using the lower end of the range. I'd measure the current the coil uses before installing it, then add a power resistor to drop the voltage. Or find a way to ventilate the compartment it's in. Maybe with a 120V muffin fan.

Just thinking out loud.

Thank you all, I did some more checking and it turns out the CG operator was resetting my breaker without my knowing. I would loose power, then he would reset his breaker, I assumed the switch was going out, as this is how it acted last time. I finally figured out was going on and plugged into a different spot and working fine! Again thank you all for your help. Steve i'll keep your email for the next one!!
