Hoping someone has driven this road. Good Sam trip guide shows taking Hiway 287 out of Fort Collins to Laramie, WY. It looks like a good road on the atlas but as we all know some of these maps are not accurate. Leaving here on the 20th, heading to Idaho. Thanks for any help or advice you can give us.

It's a US hiway and it's a good road. I used to take it for a shortcut from Denver to Western Wy. Craig

Real pretty road. Of course if it snows it wouldn't be a good choice, so check the weather.

The road is fine - watch for high wind warnings, especially in the spring. One of the worst stretches of road for high profile vehicles in the wind (south of Laramie).

We travel to Laramie several times a summer. We have taken that road a lot of times but cut over to it from the Owl Creek Canyon Road (half of it is dirt road) from I25 to avoid going through Fort Collins traffic. You can also get to it from Mountain Vista Dr.(no dirt) off I25 (look at Fort Collins inset on your atlas). After all that we generally just go straight up to Cheyenne then west to Laramie and save all the hassle. However at this point we aren't interested into too much scenery and rather drive 4 lane roads.

In September 2010 we drove Highway 287 from Dallas,TX to Yellowstone. Once we got to Colorado ( and before as well )we ran into several spots where road work caused up to 30 minute delays waiting on the "Follow Me" wagon.
It was very windy and I'm guessing that's why there are miles and miles of wind generator farms out there. This was one time I really wished I had a 400+HP diesel to push through the headwind.
Overall, I think 287 is a great road and once the work is finished, it will be even better.
Enjoy!!

We took 287 after leaving Coulter Bay campground in Yellowstone to Rawlins, WY last July. It's a fine road with very few elevations until you get west of Dubois, WY. There was some serious road construction going on between Dubois and Moran. There could be a couple of slight delays, but some of the new road was done further east and was a very nice road. There are some very wide open spaces along this route where we didn't see anyone for miles
