I am looking for a truck to pull my travel trailer that weighs 6000lbs loaded.

I am considering the following vehicles:
- 2008 Ford F150 Super Crewcab 4x4 with the 5.4L V8 and the 3.73 rear axle with 18 inch tires.
- 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 with the 5.7L V8 Hemi and the 3.92 rear axle with 20 inch tires.

I am wondering what your experiences are with either of these trucks. I know that the F150 is rated to pull 8700lbs while the Ram is rated to pull 7500 (or 8500 lbs if I put 17 inch tires on it). Thanks for your help!

Both will handle that weight safely and effectively

I have no issue and am happy pulling our TT (5600 # loaded) with my 2007 F-150 4x4 SuperCrew. I have the 5.4L V8, 3.73 rear, with 17 inch tires, and towing package. Might want to also check the available payload capacity between the two trucks you are looking at. My F150 is listed at 1,625 lbs per the yellow sticker. Good luck!

I suspect also that both will make a fine tow vehicle for your trailer. for what it's worth, I've towed my 6,000 lb. Coachmen (40,000 miles) and my 8,000 lb. Rockwood (50,000 towing miles) with my 04 model F 150 and it never required a repair of any type. I suspect the Dodge may have a little more power but hard to beet the Triton for reliability.

Ram engine and trans, F-150 crew cab size. Ram's quad cab is really and extended cab with forward hinged doors. If you have people to put in the back seat, F-150 all the way. If you can swing it, a 2009+ F-150 Supercrew is significantly better in terms of an even larger crew cab and a 6-spd trans with better ratios than the Ram.

They will both make a great TV. For me I would take the Ford..the 5.4L is a very proven motor

The wife likes the Dodge the best!

Can someone explain why the Dodge is rated to pull less than the Ford if it has more horsepower and torque?

The RAM will be a slightly better puller IMO.
The Hemi is 345hp, the 5.4L is 310 hp.
The RAM has a 5 speed auto vs the Ford's 4 speed.

The performance difference won't be huge though, and both would do a fine job I'm sure.

This is for 2009s, but here is a comparison test close to the model years you're looking at. http://www.insideline.com/dodge/ram-pick........kup-truck-comparison-test-and-video.html

Like someone else mentioned, the Hemi has more power. I found the three 5.4 Ford V-8's I owned, to be lacking in that department.
