We were told by Yakama that they do not advise roof mounting kayaks on vehicles being towed behind motorhomes because the "tornado like" winds created can cause the kayaks to be ripped off the roof.

Has anybody heard this, experienced this or done this sucessfully?
It may have something to do with specific vehicles too but I'm not sure.

It makes sense because of the vortex caused by the flat rear of the motorhome. Have you ever driven a pickup and watched the stuff floating around in the bed by the rear window? Yep, makes perfect sense.

I would be surprised if there was much wind at all behind my coach. Sorta like "drafting" at Daytona but I could be wrong. I think the key word they used "tornado like" is really stretching it. I'll see if I can find a volunteer to ride in my toad for a ways with the sun roof open. They can stick their head up see what the truth is. Don't think I'll ask the DW to be the volunteer though........

But usually my beer cans aren't strapped down in the bed of my pick'm up truck like kayaks.

I thought about pulling a little trailer behind my toad. I know with travel trailers that the first trailer has to be a fifth wheel not a bumper tow.
This also differs from state to state.
Anybody pull a trailer behind their toad?

That is an aspect I had not considered. It is probley a liability issue on the part of Yakima. Probley happened once and you know how it goes. We run a THULE roof rack with both yaks strapped side to side front and back on our van roof. Never moves. Our van, however, is our tow vehicle.

They said it would be fine on a tow vehicle or of course just a vehicle by itself but not behind a motorhome. Then he suggested drilling in the roof of my coach to mount up there........yea right, like thats gunna happen.

My sister puts a kayak on the roof of her Saturn towed behind the motorhome without any problems.

We haven't done it yet, but we will be doing it this summer (two kayaks on a Kia Optima toad). I'll be sure to tie both kayaks down bow and stern and not just rely on the racks. But I do that anyway.

We also plan to put two bicycles on the rear hitch of the toad.

I would think the yacks on the roof of a vehicle driving down the road would have a better chance of being damaged than on top of a toad.
On one trip I was watching a styrofoam cup left on the bumper of the RV through the rear camera. It stayed there during the entire 200 mile trip.
