The following are the DBs for three comparable generators:

Champion 2000: The db ratings are all over the map. Sam's club says 53db @ 1/4 load. Cabelas says 54db @ 1/4 load. The Champion website says 53db @ 1/4 load, but more importantly, the Champion website says at 23 feet.

Yamaha EF2000IS: 51.5db to 61db

Honda EU2000I: 53db to 59db

Conclusion: There's a HUGE difference between 53db from 1 foot away and 53db from 23 feet away. How can you make a comparision when there are variables? You'd think there would be an industry standard so there wouldn't be any variables.

On a related note, read this: Perceptions of Increases in Decibel Level

Imperceptible Change 1dB

Barely Perceptible Change 3dB

Clearly Noticeable Change 5dB

About Twice as Loud 10dB

About Four Times as Loud 20dB

I always thought that the db ratings were at 21'. I could be wrong, as a matter of fact I probably am.

Nah, you're right and I errored. 21 feet is the standard. My next question is, what's the range for that Champion?

I believe most but not all generator manufacturers use the European standard of 7 meters(22.96 feet) when measuring generator noise.

From someone who has owned both the Honda eu2000 and the Champion 2000, I can say that at about idle speed (about 400-500W being produced), both generators have the same level of loudness. You can carry a normal conversation while standing 2 feet away from either generator. But the 'noise' being produced by both is different. Where you find a greater difference is when both are running at a continuous max of 1600W. The Champion is somewhat louder.

No doubt, Honda is somewhat better in terms of noise. But the Champion at 1/2 the price (in America and 1/3 the price in Canada) represents a better value to my eyes.

"

Few topics invoke such a wide range of opinions so I'll share another:

"IF" the Champion had Honda's enviable long term record of quiet/reliability, fuel economy, resale value and was supported by the hundreds (thousands?), of Service centers then it might become the better value but..... the Champion simply does not. IMHO: You get what you pay for.

21 feet is close, but the newest standard is 7 meters.
Don't forget the range on Hondas and Yamahas is from 1/4 load to full load.
Not to mention the direction the exhaust is pointed. We found a difference of between 3 and 5 DB from measuring toward the exhaust and 180 degrees at the 7 meter standard.

How can you compare?

Power decreases with the square of the distance. So if you use the 1' level as the reference, Then at Well let's see. 23 feet us 27 db out, that is to say add 27 db to the 23 foot figure, so 53 DB at 23 feet is 80 db at 1 foot.

At least on the power scale.. I'm not sure if that applies to sound levels, I'm not an audio engineer.. More electroincs centered.

A suggestion... There is an AP for smart pones (Alas I don't know the name but I recently heard it and I remember where.> Bob Heil of Heil Sound will know the name, so will Leo Laport of TWIT (This Week In Technology) tv.

Also Radio Shack sells a meter For Fifty Bucks That can tell you a lot, Buy one and let your feet do the walking in an area where generators are used, or for that matter near any NOISY motor, lawn mower, whatever, You will, in less than an hour, learn more than I know about it (I am being serious here) simply by noting the meter readings at varying distances.

I'm not an audio engineer either but human perception of sound levels is highly non-linear as that scale someone posted above shows. 3 DB I believe is actually twice as loud physically but not perceived that way by people. Frequency has a lot to do with how loud something seems to be as well.
