A place with clubs, golf course, and a market but no paved roads. Interesting.

I didn't say you would use 4x4, I said you need 4x4.

Wow.. It's taken 5 pages of posts and only about 3-4 actual posts about how to adjust for a 5th wheel with a 4x4 truck...

The OP didn't ask about the need or the want of a 4x4 truck.. He asked that he's looking for a 4x2, but is getting a 'good deal' on a 4x4 and wanted to know how that would affect towing his existing 5th wheel....

4x2 compared to 4x4 ranks right up there with 'what sway control', 'what's the max trailer I can tow', 'what size truck do I need', 'can I drive with my fridge running on gas' posts!

I have my reasons for wanting a 4x4 over a 4x2 for towing a trailer, but that's not the question that was asked, was it??

Anyway, raising the 5th wheel axles is about the only thing you can do if it's too low and will ride 'nose high' and less clearance on the bed rails with the taller 4x4...

Good luck to the OP with his decision..

Mitch

Consider this:

Where I live you can't give a 4x2 away. Most of the time dealers send them off to auction. There just isn't a market used 4x2 trucks around here.

I never could figure out where your from

Wouldn't you actually "lower" the axles relative to the rest of the trailer to raise it? Kind of a "Don't raise bridge, lower the river" situation. Lots of comments on here but not a lot of great advice.

I brought th etruck home and with careful measurements we have determined it will be a perfect fit. The distance from the bed rails and the camper will be 6 inches and the camper will be level.

Depends on your need for 4WD. While it can be handy, there are disadvantages to 4wd. I have had both and for normal towing, the 2wd was more user friendly. I didn't need a step stool to access stuff the bed. Easier to get in and out of. A bit better mileage and lower mtc costs. A 4wd is just more complex. A 2wd drive will also have a higher payload capacity because it is a lighter truck without the extra weight of the front differential, drive shafts and transfer case. I had to put the pin box on my 5er to its highest setting to get the trailer level with the 4X4. An axle swap can solve level problems but raising the 5er can't help its stability and a higher profile will mean more drag.

On the other hand, if you think you will be using the truck in places where you will need the extra traction, you should get 4wd.

6" of bed/fiver clearance should be fine if you don't have much boon docking in your future.

You don't want it too high. The higher it gets the worse your aerodynamics will be.

(I wonder if my latest reply to the OP is good enough to satisfy the forum Nazis?)
