Quote:

Ford in 2007 issued a "secret" technical service bulletin to dealers advising them of the problem, but neither recalled the affected trucks nor offered to repair them for free, the complaint said.

Technical service bulletins are not secret and are usually only free when the vehicle is still under warranty.

Our '97 F150 has the frame on one side almost rusted threw, but the fuel tank straps are fine. We got a recall to have the straps fixed.

If my memory serves, it only affects the SuperDuties and E-series vans with diesels. I've seen the damage with my own four eyes, and personally know the engineer who did some of the analysis. The only thing I know of that they found in affected tanks that they analyzed was high levels of acetic acid in the fuel. However, Ford still has not pinned-down the source of the acetic acid in the fuel. Apparently it can be a byproduct of the production of biodiesel, but the affected trucks haven't been limited to any one region or set of operating conditions. There just wasn't any rhyme or reason to it. Not all the tanks are affected, despite coming from the same supplier, and that isn't making it any easier to figure out.

I'll be curious to see what plays out in the lawsuit... Should be interesting.

Another reason to love Ford superduties.

If only they were flawless & perfect like the GM and Dodge offerings

I have never had a fuel tank issue with any of the Ford's I have owned. Sounds like a lot about nothing.

I heard years ago that biodiesel would cause the lining inside the tank to come off and that was why they said no more than B5 in them. Biodiesel guys were using remote tanks for their bio and OEM tank for dino-diesel. Check the boifuel section of a Ford fan site: I read it some time ago but didn't persue the matter.

I just replaced my fuel tank sending unit because of contaminated diesel. This was not covered by warrenty and was plenty expensive.

The 2004 F-450 I used to have would always have shiny metal particles in the primary fuel filter at service time. There was never any particles that made it to the secondary fuel filter. I told the service manager about it at the Ford dealer. He said it was the tank delaminating. He made a note in the truck's service history, but no other action was ever taken.

The 2008 F-450 I now have hasn't done this. Although the 2008 has had a fuel pump replacement whereas the 2004 never did.
