You can go on the Ford website to the 'build & price' section for F150's and find out the cost of every option they offer on the truck by choosing that option in the build and watching the price change.
2012 F150 SuperCrew 6.5' box 2wd XLT Ecoboost engine,
with tow package and trailer brake controller, no other options.
CA MSRP = $35,465.
2012 F150 SuperCrew 6.5' box 2wd XLT Ecoboost engine,
with Max Tow package (includes trailer brake controller and 3.73 axle), no other options.
CA MSRP = $36,645.
2012 F150 SuperCrew 6.5' box 2wd XLT Ecoboost engine,
with HD Payload package (includes Max Tow package, trailer brake controller and 3.73 axle), no other options.
CA MSRP = $37,495.
It costs $1180 to add Max Tow to the basic truck, in this example.
It costs $2030 to add HD Payload, which includes Max Tow, to the basic truck, in this example.
The cost difference between selecting only Max Tow, or selecting HD Payload, which includes Max Tow, in this example, is $850.

Hey thanks for all the information. I'm going to inquire tomorrow morning sometime and I'll report my results. If push comes to shove, I think the truck in my garage now will suffice for now. If I camped more often or was in the market in the next 6 years for a camper (barring any more freak melon hail storms) it'd be a little different.
I will say this though. I'm looking forward to camping already this year. We've been blessed with a very mild winter and I'm ready to get started.
My question is, should I be towing my trailer down to the scale with 100 miles on the odo and without a brake controller? Two dealers said I could but I don't want to mess anything up on this new truck.
Opinions/thoughts?
The trailer weight (and tongue weight) hasn't changed. Why not just drive the truck to the scale and see what it weighs alone.
SoCalDesertRider wrote: Personally, I would take the truck back and get one with the HD Payload and Max Tow options on it. You're already paying for the Ecoboost engine option and regular Tow Package options. It's not all that much more money to get the HD Payload option, which includes the Max Tow option and the Ecoboost engine, as well as the 3.73 rear axle. With the HD Payload package and it's included Max Tow, Ecoboost, 3.73 axle and 17" LT-E tires, you will have the heaviest duty F150 Ford makes, can easily tow your trailer and have the option of towing a larger trailer in the future, without buying another truck at that time.
Have to agree with this 100%

Actually it's a brand new trailer so everything needs to be weighed in. In the last year I've upgraded the camper, TV and bike. Time to kick back now!!
Includes Class IV trailer hitch receiver, 7-pin wiring
harness, upgraded radiator, auxiliary transmission oil cooler,
trailer brake controller, upgraded rear bumper, and 6-speed
SelectShift Automatic® transmission
The HD package Includes:
Heavy-Duty Payload Package increases GVWR to
3,720 kg (8,200 lbs.) for improved payload and towing;
includes 17" 7-lug aluminum wheels, LT245/75R17E BSW
all-terrain tires, heavy-duty shock absorbers, upgraded springs
and radiator, auxiliary transmission oil cooler, and rear axle
with 9.75" gear set and 3.73 limited-slip gear ratio (Regular Cab
and SuperCab with 8' box; restrictions apply)
The max trailer towing package offers some upgrades including GVWR up to 7700 pounds, about 350-500 pounds more than without depending on cab/bed/2wd/4wd combo. It is about $600 MSRP and also includes the integrated brake controller and extendable towing mirrors. The HD payload package offers 8200 pound GVWR for all bed/cab/drivetrain combinations for another $1000 over the max trailer towing equipment.
You mentioned towing a motorcycle, a heavy one at that. If your TT a toy hauler? They often have high tongue weights and stronger frames and are difficult for half ton TVs to stay under the hitch and payload ratings. They can also be a bit more work to fine tune the WD hitch because of the varied weight distribution of the loads.
It test drove a max trailer tow package equipped F-150 last year withe EB.3.73 in a 6000-ish pound truck. My family came along for the ride and I test towed my 6000-pound TT for about 20 miles. The engine drivetrain was fantastic! My 6.0L V8 I have now does not do quite as well as that EB. No worries about that little motor.

The dealer is happy to assist with the upgrade. I'll find out more tonight after work. They called me first thing this morning to ask about the one in my garage. They seem very willing to get me the truck I want. I'll post back the results when I get them. So far looks to be a great experience.
