My question is, should I be towing my trailer down to the scale with 100 miles on the odo and without a brake controller? Two dealers said I could but I don't want to mess anything up on this new truck.

Opinions/thoughts?

The trailer weight (and tongue weight) hasn't changed. Why not just drive the truck to the scale and see what it weighs alone.

Actually it's a brand new trailer so everything needs to be weighed in. In the last year I've upgraded the camper, TV and bike. Time to kick back now!!

OK. So when I finally arrived up at the dealer they showed me a nice candy apple red XLT with the max tow option on it but I really liked the blue. I parked both trucks next to each other and told the guy I wanted the red truck in blue. There was a dealer close by that had a nicely equipped red XLT for 1500 less so he found me one 3 states away that was blue and is having it brought in...so I bought it. So later this week I get to go see what I bought.

I'm sure glad I was able to get all this nice input from everyone. Thanks again!

. No I decided to skiP it. Mostly because I don't need it but also because I didn't want to order it as none were available. In doing some I got some other features that I didn't already have and all for only 800 more. If I was camping more than thirty days a year it'd be a little different. Now I wish it would get here so I could update my photos.

So what do you suppose the price difference is between two equally equipped trucks, one with max tow and one without?

That question can't be answered exactly because it depends on your starting point. For example, I believe it is less on an FX4 than an XLT because the FX4 already has some of the equipment. Best to go on the Ford site and "Build Your Own". That will allow you to build different configurations and see what the prices are. On my FX4, the cost for Max Tow was about $500.

Max tow gives you another 400lbs payload and a higher tow rating. It will put your GVW up near 7650-7700.

I think that will be more than plenty to make towing my trailer comfortable and still have a fairly decent (on MPG) truck for around town when I'm not camping and still have a little room to upgrade if the need arises. It'll mostly be just the two of us with an occasional outing with the kids.

Unfortunately, I have to wait a week for the truck to arrive. Let me tell you, this has been the longest week in a long time and it's been raining the entire time. If it should arrive I'll post a photo but you all know what they look like. We are planning three major camp outs already (Wisconsin, Branson and ...oh wait just 2 now...I'll fix it).

As for the toy hauler comment back there. Yes it's a toy hauler and it's a pretty heavy bike but the trailer itself is fairly small IMHO. It only weighs in at 4,000 lbs dry and no more than 7 loaded. With everything hooked up correctly, I think this truck will handle it if everything said holds true (which is why I asked in the first place). I think the biggest challenge will be getting the WD Hitch setup correctly.

Got a text today. Looks like it will be here tomorrow night and ready Saturday (I had the rear view camera added to it so I can see my trailer) but since I'm travelling Saturday I get to wait until Monday.

I don't care. It'll be worth the wait.
