This neutral non-brand-loyalist must tip the cap to the Duramax...any year, really.
Going on 10 years now with only 2 "common" issues, early injector issues (for which they stepped up on the warranty) and fairly rare overheating on a few model years (fixable for not much $).
No matter what brand one drives or likes best, anyone reasonable has to admit that the Duramax/Allison drivetrain has proven to be an extremely reliable performer over its decade in service.

Mine too. Someone stole mine on March 1st. I wanted to keep my LBZ forever.
If you've got an 06 LLY or 06-07 LBZ, get a good alarm for it. That's what everyone wants and they'll steal it if they can.

Okay, I'm going out on a limb here, but exactly how bad was the damage? Do you have connections to anyone that runs a body shop?
You could possibly take the total on the truck then buy it back from the insurance company. With only 36K miles on the clock, you have a very rare beast indeed and you have a couple of options.
1) If you have connections to a body shop have them fix it.
2) Locate good used parts (maybe even whole cab and/or bed whichever is damaged), install that, and then paint to match
3) Take the totalled truck and sell the drivetrain components and make a little money on it. Let's be honest here, the Duramax/Allison combo has a great reputation, but there are still some that fail. If you can advertise a complete engine/tranny combo with that low mileage you can bring top dollar. You also have good low mileage axles, transfer case, fuel pump, A/C compressor....the list goes on and on. Depending on the buyback cost from the insurance company, you might be able to sell the truck piece by piece and make some coin on it. I guarantee you some salvage yard will make a mint on your truck.
ya, father in law runs small body shop..... Truck BAD!!!Dash coming apart..totaled ..really looks unbelievable..I went thru the pass side and almost out the drivers side of his car. Guy came across the interstate and ran into me, and killed himself. Highway patrol, saying not my fault that theres more there than they can say..... waiting for police report.. They were amazed I walked out of it with few problems....
oh and air bags didnt deploy..

Sorry to hear about your truck. Was it parked in your driveway when they stole it?
"If the women don't find ya handsome they should at least find ya handy!"
Rob, if you were hit in the side of your truck, the airbags not deploying isn't a problem. They only measure the "delta V" or change in velocity in the forward direction since that is the only way their deployment can help you. They can sometimes deploy in side impacts but only if the system determines that your change in forward velocity requires it. The module for frontal/knee bags and only measures along the x axis. Vehicles equipped with side impact bags and/or yaw mitigation systems ("stability control") will measure in the y direction (sideways).
These modern airbag systems are very sophisticated. They take into account the following (and sometimes more) before making the command to deploy/not deploy:
- Seat belt switch status (buckled/unbuckled)
- Driver and/or passenger seat position within the travel adjusters (fore and aft)
- Deceleration rate (is it an impact with a brick wall or a bunch of bushes)
- Vehicle speed
- Passenger seat occupancy and occupant classification (I.E., is there someone in that seat, and if so, how big/heavy are they)
- and much more
Then it decides whether or not to just deploy seat belt pretensioners, airbag stage 1, (known by those in my industry as a "soft bag"), or both airbag stages which makes the bag deploy harder and faster but has more of a chance to contribute to minor injury.
It does all of this in about 10-30 milliseconds or 10 to 30 one thousandths of a second.
If your bags didn't deploy, it's because they wouldn't have helped you in the collision you were in. I can almost guarantee that the police agency investigating that collision has downloaded the EDR from your truck.
I had one a month or so ago where a cyclist was struck and killed by a 2500HD Duramax. The EDR recorded the vehicle parameters such as speed, engine RPM, brakes on/off, throttle position, seat belt use, etc, for the 5 seconds PRIOR to hitting the cyclist. Even though the airbags didn't deploy in the truck (as they weren't needed), the EDR system picked up and recorded the impact and accompanying vehicle parameters at the time. The system still records and saves the data, even in a "non-deployment" event. Very helpful for my line of work.

Check it out with your diesel mechanic and see what the tech says. One thing they can check for you is to see if its been chipped.
If its been chipped, you might not know exactly what they were attempting to do with the engine. It might be OK, but I would be suspicious.
The other thing to remember 104K on 500K engine ain't much. There's a lot of life under the hood. I paid that much on one that had 87K 4WD (but an LBZ) on it about mid-2011. So I am guessing there must be some nice accessories on it.
My mechanics love the GMC/Chevys and says you just can't kill'em. The Allison transmission is a thing of envy, though you will have to get use to quiet diesel engine (Fords & Dodges announce they are diesels from a long way aways).
Mine has done just fine.
PS - One other thing. The fuel filter is a pain to change until my mechanic showed me the trick. You take off the air cleaner intake over the fuel filter, 5 minute job at best, then you have access to the fuel filter from on top of the engine! Its better than the other method of taking out the dust cover in the wheel well.
I knew if David's Dad said he is a good mechanic, he's a good mechanic!!!

Yes, it was backed into my driveway. Not a sign or break in, just an empty driveway when I walked outside the next morning.
donn0128 wrote: Keith, I luv ya brother, but the "official" fix did not work. Never did a thing for my overheating LLY. What cured it was to trade it for a Cummins. I have yet to see the Cummins climb over 200 Degrees. Yea, I know Killerbee has a fix for the LLY, and it does not involve replacing the air box, because that was another band aid and not a cure.
Don, I accept you had one of the outliers that did not respond to the air-box fix. It did make a difference on the majority of units that had the fix.
Since I installed the LBZ air cleaner I have yet to hear my secondary fan kick in and I run at 200 degrees or less.
