Bristol Motor Speedway owner Bruton Smith is considering about $1 million worth of changes to return his Tennessee track to the way it was before a 2007 reconfiguration.

"We are going to take a very hard look at it this week," Smith told The Associated Press on Monday. "We have everything in our computers that shows us what the track used to be and what it is now, and we started working on that last night. I'll have an answer for you next week on if we'll alter the track."

But Smith insisted it was the rain, not fan apathy over the current style of racing at Bristol, that contributed to Sunday's poor crowd.

I'm not falling for it! The track was a one-groove configuration, with little to no passing. They spent the big bucks to fix it, and with good results (with at least two grooves, and the drivers like it). And now, Bruton is talking changing it back? He's a great promoter, VERY successful. He ain't going to change the track. He's got something else up his sleeve.

Drivers may like it, but fans don't...you should have listened to Sirius Radio.

Fans come to Bristol to see bumpin' and rubbin. They come to see paint trading. They come to see the chrome horn in action.

Darrel Waltrup started the race broadcast with..."Boogidy, boogity, boogity...let's go trading some paint boys."

This year's race (while a decent one) only had 5 cautions in 500 laps...

If you remember the bestest/most exciting race you've ever seen, THAT'S what you'll want every race to be, it's that simple. Why can't Bruton give us that?

FUEL prices, rain, and the general economy are. of course the main contributors to low attendance. But. of course, most of those who did not attend, watched it on TV. So the over all revenue stream is not too reduced. Look at Baseball, in most places the attendance is foul, but the TV money keeps it floating, Even though the stands weren't packed, they were pretty full.

I think that the track at Bristol should be returned to the format that produced some for the best racing of the aeason. For me that's what makes Nascar so great. High speed long tracks, short track, road courses, all of the different skill sets and equiptment required to meet these various challenges.

The thing that concerns me most is the now reduced number of car sponsorships. There are some top flight teams without dependable sponsors, in the long run this could be a big player in reduced results for the show. Forty three enteries makes for a "really big shew", if this were to be reduced becaue of lack of sponsors, it would be a big change, not for the good !
