I am planning on buying a TV for the trailer and hoping there is something out there that I can play media with. I have used a Philips DVD player with USB in the past which can play almost any media, but I'd rather avoid using a DVD player if I can.

I think Western Digital had a WDTV Live which was portable in the past. What have you used in place of a DVD player to play media on a TV? I prefer component or HDMI connection to have 720p or better playback.

Objective is to be able to play a variety of different media from a USB drive, including MPEG2, MKV, etc.

Thanks.

My laptop has an HDMI connection, as well as a Bluray player, a USB 3.0 port and wifi for streaming. It works well connected to a TV.

My laptop computer, iPad and iPod Touch all provide HDMI output, but not all put out 720P HD.

I tend to stay with the laptop for feeding to a TV because it has the best output and the most storage, even though I prepare the videos for the iPod when I record from DVD. If I synch something to a handheld, I am usually planning to watch it handheld.

Media players are a great way to carry your video/audio/pictures around.

Rather than retype you can check out the ones I mentioned in THIS POST

While the WD brand is well known there ARE other players out there that have more features.

If you are planning to play HD MKV files the WD live has a few Codec issues with them and may no be fully compatible with all flavors of that file.

Go to Amazon.com or Newegg.com and do a search for "media player". Check the customer revues and see what issues users of the product are having.

The biggest chore will be copying DVDs to a format that will be viewable with the media player. Most DVDs are encrypted so additional software is needed to make copies.

Granted most any commercially made DVD will be encrypted, but that is not an issue IF you know where to find a FREE program which IS able to copy the DVD to hard drives!

DVDFAb HD Decrypter WILL take care of the problem.
DVDFab HD Decrypter

DVDFab Is a very nice utility which has other trialware features but the Decryption portion is totally free.

Once the DVD is decrypted you can then copy the entire DVD or even portions to your media player or flash drive. Nice thing is no more flipping DVDs again and again and you can backup all of your collection onto a spare HD.

Another useful utility is WMRecorder, the free version comes with WMConverter which use very useful to convert video and audio file formats to formats you can use for on the go devices.

You can find it HERE
