On our last big trip we spent over $800 in gas which means a few stops for gas along the way. After we got home and a few weeks later we found out 2 of our credit card #'s were stolen and someone tried using our accounts to buy stuff at Best Buy & Target. We only used these cards AT THE GAS PUMPS, I'm not sure if they were both stolen at the same pump since I would swipe 2 different cards to fill the tank. We are thinking about buying gift cards for fuel for our next trip insted of swiping credit cards each time, plus our grocery store is offering bouns points this month if you purchase gift cards (they have shell gas cards).
Anyone else have Credit Cards hacked at the pumps?

I haven't heard of this but it is entirely possible. Could of even been a rouge employee. Were the charges all from one location? Were they attempting online purchases?
A few months back Aldi food stores had card swipers installed, that unknowing to them, had the ability to gather the needed info to steal peoples credit info. Hacked Aldi Card Readers

It happens. Gas pumps transmits the data via wireless to the computer inside. All it takes is someone sitting in a car close by to receive the data on their computer.

The credit card company said someone made fake credit cards with our account number and tried to buy stuff in the stores, not online. and it was in 2 different states. So whoever got the account numbers must have sold them off.

saw this on the news. they said if you are going to use a card, get out and pull on the card receiver and if it pulls out of the machine then it is a scanner and go inside to have them scan your card. the illegal scanners will pull right out of the gas pump. they also said that some stations are putting seals on their pumps to make sure nobody has tampered with the pumps they just use a screw driver to gain access to the inside of the pump after hours and put scanners inside the pump. the best thing to do is go inside and have them scan your card or pay cash.

There is an entire section of the internet called the black net where the selling of credit card information is common place. We had a few detectives that were assigned to do nothing but surf that all day long. Ended up with some great arrests from that. Many times they use a card skimmer which is a device that attaches on the outside of the actual card reader. They can get the data right off that skimmer. Then there are the wireless systems as mentioned above that are easy to tap into and get the data. I also only use a specific card for fuel so anytime it is used for something else we get a call on the phone from the card company.

They can also pick up your password or other identifying information by sitting nearby and picking up the radio transmission. The cow is out of the barn on this - it's a huge industry, and I doubt it will ever be really fixed. All you can do is go back to cash or have a good program in place to catch the fraud and stop it once it starts.
And never, ever, do online banking, online shopping, or anything else that involves giving personal information, while on a free Wi-Fi network. Instead, use your own "air card" or tether with your cell phone. There's really no free lunch - Wi-Fi is fine for reading the news, as long as you are on a computer that contains no personal information, but that's about all your safe using it for.

My credit card account with one of the "major" banks was hacked this week for the second time in a year. While chatting to the fraud guy on the phone he claimed that gas stations are now the most frequent place they see accounts hacked.
No real answer. I'm just glad the bank is on top of it, rejects the phony transaction and hangs the account as soon as they see something suspicious.
But I need a backup "2nd card" for if that happens when I'm out on the road!

My bank credit card got hacked last week. Whoever did it tried to order about 1300.00 from Walmart.com but Walmart called me right away and stopped the order. Ditto the bank.
All my credit cards have a instant text msg from the bank to notify me when any internet order or a charge over a certain amount occurs.
I have, also, been advised not to use my debit card, except at a indoor ATM, as the protections on a debit card are a lot less than a credit card. (the thief can drain your bank account and it takes a lot of time to get your $ back, if you can get the $ back).

I also heard about this on the news. They are putting a device on the credit card insert at the pumps that scans the card. When you pull away, they take off the device and have the info. They suggested that when you use credit cards at the pumps, look at it to see if you can see anything added, and tug on it. If there is an insert, it should come out when you give it a little tug.
