I just purchased a 97 damon intruder and last night the light was off. this am when i got ready to leave the step light stays on when steps are in. The way i understand it the light is supposed to be on when steps are out? they are Kwikee electric steps.

You are correct. The odds are, the previous owner or Damon installs a seperate light switch. The Kwikee step module and instructions have a provision for a seperate light control switch and some OEM's install that extra switch. Try flipping some switches by the entry door to see if the light goes out. Doug

I tried all of the switches by the door. it is strange because the light is on when step is in and not on when out???
thanks for the quick response. If i take the bulb out it should not cause any problems right?

My light stays on only when steps are out AND the switch is on. I don't know what the switch does when engine is off and stairs are wherever.... hmmmm, something else I need to figure-out on this thing.
Its not practical, but I'd like the light on when the stairs are stored while engine is running, but RV is in park and I'm in a hurry to get outside. Maybe that is the reason it was apparently re-wired.
A few times I've almost broken a leg by not giving the stairs time to deploy when the door is opened from inside. I think my wife and son have done the same thing.
Could be a genetic flaw, I guess. Or something in the RV water.

One thing I forgot. You have a 1997 model and I will bet, someone has changed the motor or control kit and you have the new style kit and they found that when they opened the door the step retracted and when they closed it extended because they DID NOT read the directions for the updated control kit which requires the door magnet to be changed also which caused the step to operate in reverse. There are RV'ers on this forum that ran into that problem and instead of READING the directions, they rewired the motor to get it to operate correctly and then that would cause the light to operate like yours. If you crawl under the step, you will see a wire going to the light and it can be separated to disconnect the light.
That is what I did a long time ago as I really didn't need that light.
