Sometimes those grills at the CG are pretty grungy looking. Does anybody know how to really clean them enough to put some burgers or a couple of steaks??
Foil across it kind of ruins the ambiance of grill marks, etc.
Thank you

Gave up on that idea the first time I saw a heavily used disposable baby diaper smoldering in the fire pit. We cook on our own grill. I KNOW what's burned in there!

Look in camping stores for screens or grill tops that you can put over the grill. I'm currently using a screen which is sold as a "splatter" screen. Won't hold up forever, but it's cheap & will be good for a few uses.

I'm with Fish 'n' Grits... We have Weber Q, and wouldn't even dream of using the grills in the campground.
You might get a portable grate that you can set atop the grill... that way the food is actually contacting your grate instead of the one that is all nasty. I'm not a big fan of the foil idea either...if the food isn't getting some flavor from the fire...then you might as well nuke it in the microwave.
The other reason I don't like those grills...most have no cover. I like having a cover on the grill.

Hot charcoal disinfects the grill!
Wire brush the hot grill to remove the char.

. . .I'm with patinlouisana but I went to local metal supply / welding shop & picked up some FREE gravel screen for those times there is no grill around; cleaned it up by getting it red hot. . .Happy as a pig in poop now. . . .

wadded up aluminum foil in a ball and scrub, followed by hot coals.
I made a small grate from expanded metal with 1" square tubing frame so my meat is at least 1" from a grate that may be bad. also use it over open fire by stacking rocks to get it off the flames for cooking

We seldom use the furnished grill to put food directly on but if you WANT to, just rub them down with some wadded up aluminum foil or carry a wire brush. There would be no GERMS left on them if they're hot enough to cook on but you DO want to remove loose rust particles and dirt to prevent them becoming extra "crunchies" in your food.

Yuuuup! Only use the camp fire pit for ambiance not cooking. Gas grills are cheap to buy and you know who cooked what in them.

If you like the open campfire cooking there are lots of these available. Search on Grill tripod:
