We just ordered the Rand Mcnally RV7710 for our Motorhome and looking for an inexpensive GPS for auto. We are looking at the Garmin Nuvi 1450, the Tom Tom Via 1505 and the Tom Tom XXL 550. All three advertise life time maps. This is important to us. We have read some bad reviews on the ability to download updated maps on the Tom Tom. Anyone have any experience with any one of these three?

Before you buy...
Test it to see if it can find Illinois Beach State Park -South Unit.
If it puts you going East on Shiloh Blvd in Zion IL, DO NOT buy it.
The only one I have seen that gets it right is the Nextar.

Have had a Tom Tom for at least 5 years. Not impressed with their accuracy. Even MS Street & Trips is out in a lot of rural places. Really no excuse for this sort of garbage. I think that I would consider a Garmin if I had to do it again. Lifetime maps are only good for as long as the device is supported. I read this in the fine print!

I've not tried downloading any new maps on the TomTom XXL550 that I currently use, however, this TomTom will be my last. My XXL550 stutters when it tries to say 'toll road', that is if it says anything at all! The other TomTom I had would constantly turn itself on/off for a rather annoying drive! I had a Magellan before either of these and it was probably the best of the three so far, but some crackhead burgled it from my truck at work one day. My next unit will either be a Garmin or Magellan. Sorry to be so 'ranty'!!

I love my Garmin. Had it for about 5 years and it rarely makes a mistake.

I have no experience with Tom-Tom other than riding with friends who owned one. All of my GPS units have been Garmins dating back to the 2610 model. Garmin repaired a problem with that unit for me after it was 9 months out of warranty at no charge or argument. I was so impressed with their "after-the-sale" customer service, that I've remained a Garmin customer.

X2 I purchased the lifetime updates from Garmin several years ago and update it twice a year. I too like the Garmin.

I just asked my Garmin Dezl 560 to route me to Illinois Beach State Park. Here are it's directions in the area.
On I-94, take exit 29 to US 41
Keep left on Skokie Hwy
Exit right on IL-132/Grand Ave
Turn right on Grand Ave
Turn Left on N Green Bay Rd
Turn Right on W Wadsworth Rd.
Arrive at park.

Had a Garmin for 3 years, then bought a Tom Tom at Costco for a good price....bad move. Put the $150 Tom Tom in a drawer and bought a new 5" Garmin Nuvi. Took the old Garmin, loaded topo maps onto it and now use it with the Rzr. The nice 8 month old 5" Tom Tom is still setting in the drawer.
