Both the black water and gray water tanks seem to fill up pretty quickly. When I check the status (button on the vent hood) I find that sure enough they're full. So, first I let the last drop of both the Black Water and Gray Water tanks escape down the drain. Then I check the status of both tanks (vent hood button) and it shows both tanks still 1/2 full.
It is 17 years old and I don't know how poorly it was treated before we came into possession. Is there a simple way to check for and possibly remove any . . . shall we call it . . . debris?
May you live in interesting times,

Often, The sensors in the tanks get covered over, and will not read correctly. There is a good chance the tanks are empty, but reading 1/2 full. Mine do that. Some one on here told how to clean the sensors, but i forgot, Just not that important to me. But I'm sure they will chime in again.

I'll guess that the sensors are probably gunked up inside the tank. You might have some success in the black tank by spraying with a hose from up top, through the toilet drain opening. Spray all around well. Another help is a Flush King, which has a knife valve and a hose attachment. You hook the Flush King to your drain, empty tanks, close the valve and turn on the water. This fills the holding tank with fresh water. When close to full you open the valve and drain, then repeat.
I am sure some other folks will have more ideas.

Fill your tanks up with water, add 6 capfuls of RV Digest (can buy it online or google it) and let your tanks sit for 24 hours with the RV Digest working. RV Digest has enzymes that eat up all bacteria in your tanks. It will clean your sensors right up. I've used it and it works good.

I agree with the previous poster on enzyme. We use enzyme bacteria clears in both our black and grey tanks every time I empty them. Also, about a year and a half ago I put in the SeaLevel system for reading tanks. Not very expensive and it gives a very accurate tank readings. Very useful if you boon dock.

Many keep their tanks clean using The Geo Method.

That inaccurate gauge reading is my prompt to clean and rinse the tanks a little better. Cause once those sensors are working properly, my tanks are as clean as a whistle.

Easy fix - Fill tank with some water and then dump some ice cubes in the tank and head down the road. When you stop, dump the tanks and the probes should be clean. Worth a try due to low cost.

Another thing that it "may" be is a faulty board in the control panel where you view the tanks status...If doing the cleaning doesn't take care of it..have the boards checked..
