I use both Firefox and Chrome. They both come with pop up blockers. Check your browser settings and make sure you have the pop up blocker activated.

When you ask a question like this we should know what browser you are using and what version.
If it is IE go to at least version 8 and use the built in blocker. Make sure it is turned on. In IE go to, tools>internet options> privacy, to enable.
Additionally you should use a 'hosts' file. It not only helps with popups it prevents ads, banners, HOSTS now includes most major parasites, hijackers and unwanted Adware/Spyware programs! Just like the ads the parasites never get to your PC, they are stopped from ever being delivered.
If you are serious, take a look. MVPS Host File
The only thing I ever find when I do a malware scan is tracking cookies. No trojans or hijackers.
If you think your popups have increased do a malware scan. I use SuperAntiSpyware. SUPERAntiSpyware - It's free

Pop-ups aren't all that common nowdays. typically if someone is getting a lot of them then thier machine is infected. In addition to the one mentioned above, Malwarebytes is a good free product.

Don't use the ones that show up in the pop-ups - they typically will just infect you worse.

Good luck!
