Have done all the routes down 26 to 97 to Weed,58 to 97 to 139 to 395 to tahoe,101 down and back a number of times (beautiful trip, but tireing) and of course,"the five".
As far as timing we're s'posed to be at Gaujome on the 6th of April and will be leaving on the 16th. We never get away early and so don't anticipate getting to L.A. till after AM or so. We're going to Santa Barbara 'cuz the SIL's cousins own the Savoy Cafe and Deli there. It was featured on Diners,Dives and Drive-ins on the food network the first of this month and we're wanting to try it.
Also are there any close-in RV parks at santa Barbara that are worth stopping at?

Since you're leaving on a weekday (April 16th), you'll want to be sure to get across LA at mid day, and into Santa Monica by 2 pm. Much later than that and you'll be into afternoon traffic through Santa Monica, which isn't fun in an RV.

Okay, I'm going with the 395 route driving South and 101 going North group. I drove the I-5 all the way to Redding and thought that I was going to lose something between LA and Sac. I won't drive I-5 again until I hear that it has been reconstructed both ways. I did end up with a water leak but after we left Woodland it stopped, it came back later in Elkhart. IN. Coming home from that trip thru Redding to Oly. Penn. and back South we took 101 all the way to the 101/1 split and drove to Simi Valley to drop off the DGKs. Took an extra day and I think 395 would add a day down too.

Unlike many we like I-5 and often find something to interest the DGKs and it is faster, so for me to change to either 101 or 395 took a lot. By the way we have a home in Mammoth Lakes off 395 and we never tire of that drive either.

Now coming back up North, we have the DGKs again for Easter Brake and the DW took them to the Getty Villa Tuesday and from Eagle Rock(Pasadena area) to the Getty was 1.5 hours for a 27 mile drive starting from home at 10:00 AM. DW went 2 South to I-5 South to 110 South to the I-10 to the Marina Fwy, surface streets would have been faster. Almost as long coming home. The basic problem is TMC (too many cars) and construction on the I-405.

Leaving Orange County take I-5 to the 118 to the 23 the 1/101 and North to Santa Barbara. You could also take 126 at Magic Mountain and West to the coast.

If you have the time just take 395 the whole way.
I would only take 99 if headed into the western sierra foothills.

I like the 10 to 1 to/from LA. Traffic is not that bad in the middle of the day during the week. Last time down a couple months ago construction on the 101 at Rice Ave. in Ventura resulted in a detrour to Rose Ave. to access 101. Not a big deal.

Try Cachuma Lake County Park (no reservations) on Hwy 154. Nice full hook up area about 15 minutes from the north end of Santa Barbara. Sunday through Thursday should be no problem getting in. Weekends fill up pretty fast. After the Savoy Cafe if you'll be in the area a couple days, consider a stop at the Cold Springs Tavern on 154 between Santa Barbara and Lake Cachuma. Was a stage coach stop turned into a great burger/steak spot. Kept it a lot like the origional building. Turn off is on the west side of the road on the south side of the Cold Springs bridge.

If time allows you might want to try taking 89 east at Shasta to Old Station 44 east to Susanville and 395 south to th I-15 at San Bernardino continue I-15 south to 76 and Oceanside all good 2 or 4 lane roads and nice scenery with lots to see. Then you can go back by the coast. Have fun

I would go this way also unless its snowing. I always get on 99 in Sac when going that way. Have a safe trip.

I concur on this route also and say Hi to my BIL 'The Sewer Rat'.

Skip the 99. Road is too rough and only two lanes. Too many delays with merging traffic.

I would suggest you take I5 south to Stockton, then take Hwy 4 east to 99 this is Freeway all the way south to the JCT with I5. We winter in AZ and this is the rout we use.

That being said the 395 rout is very nice if time is not an issue.
