We went looking for an F 150 4x4 XLT ecoboost truck today. Forgive me if my lingo is wrong. Our trailer has 785 lb hitch, 5826 dry, gvwr 7785.
So, there was not one on the lot that had the max tow package. While sitting down trying to figure things out, one of the salesman said that we don't need the HD payload option if we get the max trailer towing package. Because our trailer is not a 5th wheel or we are not loading the bed of the truck with stuff, we don't need the HD payload.
Can someone help me figure this out?

Of course they are going to try and sell you what they have. If you are buying new you should be able to get EXACTLY what you want--part of the benefit of a new rig. Don't settle for what is on the lot, they can either order one for you or get one from another lot. Are there other dealers in your area? Would be worth looking online to check inventory and make a day trip out of getting the truck you want.
I'm sure an Ecoboost would be great for you, please insist on getting the color you want with all the options you want--you are paying for it!
Happy truck hunting :-)

My question is - do I need the HD payload option? One guy was telling me no, I thought I did. The truck will also be a crew cab. 2 adults, 2 kids, 1 45 lb dog.

I am inclined to agree that you probably don't need the HD payload option unless you see yourself really loading the truck bed with a lot of weight. However, other than making the ride less cushy, it can't hurt to have it if you think you want it. Looks like it includes heavier frame rails, shocks, springs, and wheels. If max tow package includes the extra engine and tranny cooling (not sure), the extra cooling in HD payload may be redundant.

Get the max payload package...
Think down the road. You may decide on another trailer.
Don't make the mistake we did. We bought a tow vehicle to fit the trailer we had at the time...along came a new, bigger trailer and we then had to also buy another tow vehicle that would pull it...

I had the same issue, but I insisted on the Max Tow. Some (most??) sales people just don't get it.
Here's my situation:
Family - 600#
Dog - 20# (small, but still a dog)
Trailer Tongue Weight - 600#
Canoe - 80#
Canoe rack - 50#
Tonneau cover - 50#
Stuff - 200# (maybe, but good to throw in)
TOTAL: 1600#
My new F150 has 1700# payload capacity - and at least 3 salespeople said I did not need Max Tow. Do your own math and see.
2 other things to remember kids grow, and bigger trailers are tempting.
Good luck!

Honestly I can't imagine a bigger trailer - i take that back, maybe a bigger slide. We will get the max tow, but he threw me with not needing the hd payload.

I have a 2009 F150 FX4 with the MaxTow package and I would recommend outfitting your new Ford with it. Even though your new ecoboost F150 will have greater towing capacity I would still need it.
I have a Keystone Energy FK190 and once I get everything loaded I am glad it has the additional capacity afforded by the Max Tow package. Get the Max Tow package you will not regret it.

Sounds as though you found a salesman who knows NOTHING about towing a travel trailer but still keeps talking. Max TOW should not be an issue one way or another but you DO need the HD Payload. If you travel with your family in the truck and have a heavy tongue weight (around 1,200 lb. is max for the receiver) then it would be pretty EASY to max out the payload capacity of a NON HD F 150. The HD Payload option INCLUDES the max tow package as part of the deal. A trailer with a dry 800 lb. hitch weight will EASILY run up around 1200 lb. when fully loaded. If you have a commercial truck center in your area they probably have some of the HD on their lot but from MOST dealers you likely need to special order one. You would be surprised at the number of salesmen who don't even know the DIFFERENCE between Max tow and HD Payload.

I just bought a 2012 F-150 EB. I get it Monday. Nobody had one in town with the max tow package and built with the options I wanted and the right color.
When buying new it's amazing what service you can get if you are working with more than one dealer and are not very excited about the deal. My local dealer had one but it was the wrong color. I'm not usually one to be picky about the color but for some reason the red one wasn't doing it for me. Mainly because my trailer has blue stripes on it.
Anyway, the dealer I selected found the right truck 3 states away, bought it and is now on the way to pick it up. They are really big on customer satisfaction. If they get one answer on the survey that isn't perfect, they consider it a failure.
I basically named the price I wanted to pay and they made it happen. Granted it's a very big Ford Dealer but they have customers in all 50 states. I was pretty impressed. I traded my TV (booked at 7k) and got 16.5K in trade + rebates.
I got the max tow package but did not go for the HD package. Like you I wasn't planning on putting a lot of weight in the truck. My trailer is also at 7K GVW and I think that configuration is more than enough plus plenty of room to grow into something bigger later on down the road.
