My DS and his family came last summer to spend a week with us at the lake. His rule to the kids was "play the games while we drive, when we arrive we put them away and have family time"
Unfortunately, it was cold and rainy the entire 6 days. We played alot of cards and dominoes and watched a couple of movies but the little guy has mild autism and couldn't get the card rules straight. DS allowed this sweet child to have his Gameboy which entertained him and kept him happy.
There is a time and a place for all things. We were glad to have something that helped us have a Wonderful visit with our family.

Its a whole new world now with the social media as it is. My take on all of this is camping is suppose to be fun and gets the family together. There is plenty time for electronics and outdoor things. It usually works out the electronics kicks in as the sun starts setting anyway.
The modern RV trailers (even POPUPs) are setup for the modern appliances and electronic era items so use them. If you want to sit around your campfire and bash the folks for watching TV when camping - have at it..
I do what what I want to do to have a great time - you do whatever cranks your tractor... If your camping world pleasures clashes with my camping world pleasures then our upbringing common sense comes into play.
Its all suppose to be fun - Bring it with you... Be thankful we live in a society that lets us enjoy our time together and not have to hide under a rock for years on end.
When you get old like us and as the old saying goes "If you dont use it, you lose it" makes alot of sense.. For us daytime is for long walks along the trails and enjoying the wonders of nature. Late afternoons is for squirting squirrels with the outside shower water hose (Havent figured out anything else to use it for yet)... Between dusk to bedtime is camp fire time, people watching, and pumping up the camp site kids bicycle tires.... Our evenings usually ends with the local news and weather and Johnny Carson (whatever his name is now)...

My 2 boys can use whatever they want up until the time we arrive at the campground. Once there, all electronics go away and like many have said, it is family time. I do bring my laptop and cell phone as I am self-employed and that is part of the requirement, other than that nothing!
My boys are 9 & 8 and can play a game of cribbage between the two of them without any adult help. They learned on all our camping trips together!
One of my fondest memories as a child growing up was cruising in our sailboat from Cape Cod up the coast of Maine every summer.
The only electronics at the time was a radio and we were even prohibited from bringing those along. I did however stow away a small one so I could listen to the Beach Boys while I hid in my sleeping bag late at night.
Books were allowed of course and I remember reading Peter Benchley's novel 'Jaws' and Ernest Shackelton's 'Endurance'.
I will always cherish those memories of buying lobsters from the lobster-men right off of their boats, and rowing in to a deserted island to pick wild blueberries.
Yes, my kids bring their Xbox, iPod and me and the wife have our iPhones... We also hook the television up to satellite. What's the big deal??? My kids use the pool, play basketball, ride bikes.... But like everything else they get bored and that's when they play they Xbox or whatever. At night the younger ones are confined to the campsite so they will go in earlier than the adults and watch tv, play Xbox or my one son takes his Legos everywhere. To me camping is about relaxing and having fun, we do have rules but they don't change much from home.

I love the fact of being in nature, away from the hustle and bustle. But lets be real, if it rains, how many times can you play checkers? How many time can you play Go Fish? If you want to keep your mind, allow the kids to take their toys. just set some rules. Night time, Bad weather. Plus they take up less room. You don't have to teach them how to use them. Plus not allowing any toys would mean I would have to leave mine at home too. We use my phone to find stars at night, take pictures, video. gps for trail hiking. these things are like computers when they first came out. Everyone said you will never use it. Now look at us.

I carry my netbook, iPod touch, digital camera, and flip video. I take a lot of videos with the flip from which I harvest still pictures. I enjoy working on them in the camper late at night. I also do a lot of writing (a major reason for my getting away from home to begin with). I use the iPod touch to read each night before I go to sleep.
I am not a "camper", but someone who enjoys getting away IN a camper. For me it is about trails to hike, new places to see, and enjoying the peaceful luxury of the Colby T. What I do or don't carry with me just depends on how I feel at packing time. No rules.
