An observation and Question.....
It seems that the Motorhome and trailer lifestyles differ.
Older Couples (motorhomes) Vs. Families (trailers)
Road Warriors Vs. Destination campers
I know that I'm being overly general, and that there are many exceptions to this premise.
The way RV's are designed show a great difference.
Motorhomes that are drinks for 6, meals for 4, and sleep 2, Vs. trailers with Bunks and beds enough for family and in-laws.
The traditional class C is an exception. But it seems that most of those on the roads are rentals.
(my DP Class A sleeps 10...a rarity. Perfect for a family with 7 kids)
Is it merely the cost of a motorhome vs. a trailer that separate the two, and keep most young family's in trailers? And maybe closer to home due to fuel costs?
Our young family, has been Motorhome-ing for almost 8 years now. When trying to convince peers with kids how great the RV lifestyle is, we are looked at as aliens from another planet. While some can see themselves with a trailer doing destination campling, most cannot comprehend why the Motorhome.
Thoughts?

Personally I'd feel a little silly driving a motorhome 20 miles for a weekend of camping. MOSTLY it's because people are different and have different ideas of what's fun. Kind of like wondering why everyone doesn't prefer baseball to football or Steak over lobster.
One OTHER reason that you seem to be out of touch with, is that the average family isn't going to spend a couple of hundred K for weekend entertainment whether they can AFFORD to or not.

A class A coach would not be practical for us - right now. My truck gets dual purpose, pulling the 5er and as a work truck. Retirement may be different, but I don't know for sure.

Decent family travel trailer +- $20K
Motorhome +- $120K.
Often us older folks don't still have kids, mortgages, etc. in the budget. (hopefully)

I'd say it is money. Even if you have the money for a MH I was never able to justify the expense of ownership costs for a MH. Aside from the 100K + higher purchase cost, a MH (DP for me) is much more expensive to own. TT's and used trucks are the most economical bang for buck available. For example, You can get four TT tires for less than a single tire for a DP. Insurance costs are about 4x. When I am free to travel much more frequently and longer trips, a DP is the plan.

Towables have been the RV sales leader for many years, primarily based on a cost/utilization basis for vacationers/weekenders. Combined Class B & C sales have nearly mirrored Class A sales for at least the past five years according to the RVIA. Class C's are by far the most popular rental units, but the rental market accounts for nowhere near the total Class C sales volume each year.

It's mostly an affordability issue.
