Around here diesel is still about $0.20 more per gallon than gas.

The unfortunate reality is that most oil exploration and drilling on public lands and off-shore are still blocked by our own Government.

We filled up twice today. Before and after our day trip. 4.29 in Palm Springs. Diesel is 13 cents more. We did the Palms to pines highway today. Nice run but takes you from 200 feet to 6000 feet and then back down. Normally our little diesel smart car gets around mid 70's per mileage but with all the climbing and windy twisty of this journey it turned in a disappointing 63.2 mpg. Had a great day though. Walked in snow for the first time in years.

I'm surprised 70 HP even got you over the mountain!

both coast of the country have high fuel taxes, epa regulations and the lack of refining capacity.
if you don't mind a bit of bio or corn whiskey in the tank. prices are better in the middle of the country..
with refineries dealing with several fuel blends due to regulations, fuel will cost more in large metro areas...
most of those blends were developed for engines with carburetors. with the fuel injection and smart computers controlling the engines of today. all of those special blends are not necessary..

Our little smart cars climb pretty good. Its all about keeping them in the right gear (6 speed transmission with paddle shifters) but that highway was a LOT OF FUN. We were continually catching up to folks and having to back down. Oh, and re the 70 horsepower, ours smart cars are diesels so they only have 40 HP but slightly more torque than the gasoline American versions. Top speed is limited by the computer to 85 MPH in the diesel version vice 90 MPH in the gas version. We keep it under 70 anyway. The mileage drops like a stone after 65 mph.

Our local diesel here in TX is $0.20 more than regular unleaded gasoline. I was looking at fuel prices for an upcoming trip to IL and prices were flipped with diesel $0.50 less than gas! I wish we had that difference here!

Well, their drilling like mad in Pennsylvania, and it isn't making any difference around here.
