Thanks for all the good comments. I can't do the wheel bearings on the large 5th wheel myself. I've done bearings on boat trailers but not something this big. I plan on taking it in to a trailer shop this week and have the bearings repacked and the brakes checked. We are going to Maryland Thursday, so I guess I need to have it done before we leave. Thanks again.

What kind of greese do you guys reccomend.

When I had my 5er I used the Mobil-1 full synthetic high temp bearing grease. Got a small tub of it at Auto Zone. Lasts for years. Great stuff.....

I do mine every year. Never had a catastrophic bearing failure on the road. The cost is tiny even with my triple axle 5er. 6 New seals and a tub of grease and an afternoon spent.

X2 on NorthernLimits. I have a double axle Montana 285 RL traveling about 8-9K a year. Each year I pull the wheels, re-grease the bearings and check the bearings, brakes & magnets. Dirty job worth the effort. Can't beat preventitive maintenance.

To some extent, yes. They are permanently lubed, so there are only a few checks. The first is play in the bearings - that is, how much can you move the wheel back and forth when you have it off of the ground. It's a different amount for the 42 and 50 mm bearings. Second, if you have dust caps popping off, it's a sign of impending failure and lastly, you need to check for grease oozing out of the rear seal and around the dust cap. Then, is one hub running very hot vs the others. Dexter's web site has all the figures. To check the brakes - not real easy, but a necessary 'evil' occasionally. From personal experience, there are better choices - for our 5er, I replaced the entire axle assemblies with Easy-Lube and took the Nevr-Lubes to the local scrap dealer.

Here's Dexter's instructions for all bearings, including Nevr-Lubes - it loads very slowly, so don't be discouraged:

You aren't going to lube Nevr-Lubes. This is the single bearing 'capsule' area - and one that was failing:

These are Eze-Lube spindles - 2 bearings get installed there that need lube:

These are the Ezy-Lube bearings that need occasional servicing. These are brand new and Timkens instead of Dexter's Chinese less then great bearings:
