I make my steel cut oats in the slow cooker over night. Mix them all up with some apples, turn it on before bed, and its ready in the morning.

This is how i cook them....

1 cup steel cut oats
1 cup dried cranberries or chopped up apple, or whatever floats your boat.
4 cups water
1/2 cup half-and-half

In a slow cooker, combine all ingredients and set to low heat. Cover and let cook for 8 to 9 hours.

Start it before you go to bed. This way your oatmeal will be finished by morning.

If you have any kind of wide mouth vacuum container you don't have to actually cook them. Just pour boiling water on the oats (4-1), close it up, they'll be done by morning. This is about the only way I cook them.

I will have to try the vacuum bottle way. I eat home made granola every day, with 1/2 sliced banana a handful of frozen berries (fresh in season) and Almond Milk. The other half and ds love hot 7 grain cereal with extra steel cut oats. I usually soak the cereal overnight then it cooks up quickly in the morning. Sliced dried apricots and almonds go into the hot cereal with brown sugar and regular milk.

A place I worked used to serve the granola with steamed milk. Sounds like the best of both worlds, a warm breakfast with crunch.

Gag! The only way I can eat oatmeal is if it is a cookie. Otherwise it is just a bowl of hot, sticky, slop - no matter how much stuff is added to the bowl to make the oatmeal palatable.

Iris, I used to feel the same way. My mother cooks everything to death! But once I found that oatmeal should be chewy, I started to like it. I never use instant or quick cook, only old fashioned and steel cut.

Tried the steel cut yesterday for the first time. Cooked them for 15 minutes, about halfway between the two package recommendations. I loved them, nice and chewy, superb flavor. DW wants them more creamy, so will try cooking longer next time. She did say she liked them better than any of the quick or instant varieties.

Nothing wrong with Oatmeal cookies.

I love granola, because I get all the good grains, berries, seeds and nuts, but it is nice and crunchy.
