Hi,
Having travelled I-35 from San Marcos to Dallas last Sunday, I'm looking for an alternate route. Just towing a pop-up. Took forever in 100 miles of bumper to bumper traffic. Having towed RVs since 1970, I can say without a doubt, that that was the worst traffic we have ever seen.No construction, just cars and a few trucks. Stop and go all the way.
All opinions will be considered.
Thanks,
Bill

Bill, Take TX21 out of Sam Marcos to Bastrop. Take TX95 out of Bastrop up to Waco then pick up I-35. We hate driving I-35 through Austin.
we go to Cibolo, Tx often to visit the grandkids....Happy travels.

We've picked up 281 to the west and headed up through Wichita Falls and bypassed Dallas all together. The toll road over to Oklahoma City is rough, if you are going that way.

Monday we drove from north of Dallas to Corpus on I-35/I-37, not towing. Traffic running at 70-75 almost all the way. Only slow down was for about a mile in downtown Austin.
We drove back on I-35 on Thursday from San Antonio to north of Dallas. Ran at 70-75 most all the way. Even thru Austin we running at 65. And even at that we were being passed by other traffic.
Either you caught a very bad day or we caught some very good days.
We travel from north of Dallas to Georgetown on I-35 several times a year rarely having any traffic problem.
Part of your problem probably because it was the end of main spring break week.

Me again... What I meant to say....was how can I avoid I-35 when travelling from Oklahoma area to Harlingen, Texas. We traditionally took I-35 from San Marcos to Dallas. However, I plan to avoid I-35 in this area in the future. While I respect to comment about "not having any real traffic along that route the other day", I have always seen a lot of traffic along that piece of road. North of Dallas we stopped at a rest area and I asked a trucker if he had just come north. He said he did and thought the traffic was "normal" for that area. He said to only go thru Austin at 3:00 am or 10:00 pm!
Sorry about any confusion.

from OK south...
take I 44 down to Wichita Falls, TX, then 281 south to San Antonio and on to Harlingen. There will be some traffic, but nothing like I 35

We were in the same type traffic last Saturday from San Antonio to Dallas. Stop and go for no reason. A friend who lives at Georgetown told us I-35 is like that most of the time. He avoids I-35.

Highway 281 is a good alternative to traveling on IH-35 but....
Last Sunday was the end of Spring Break for many universities, colleges and school districts. It was also the last day for the SXSW festival in Austin. You picked a heavy traffic day to travel through Central Texas.
When we travel to Dallas from Austin we rarely encounter traffic congestion like you mentioned.
I do, however, enjoy traveling on 281 but when pulling our boat, my husband prefers IH-35.

I agree. Just a bad day. I personally like 281 better, but 35 is usually not that bad. SXSW and spring break together is just too much.

Sounds like you got into a traffic jam from a specific event somewhere along that route. It's usually 70 MPH all the way other than passing through Austin or Waco.
