It is of course a personal choice we all have to make dependent on where you camp, if you have pets, travel in cold weather, & stay in sandy/dirty areas like beaches, the desert or any rural environment.

Most manufacturers are now doing hard surface flooring for most of the unit.

A few points to consider:

*Carpet traps and holds alot of dirt you will never get cleaned out. If/when you up your carpet you will find the floor is coated with a heavy layer of dirt. This will be especially true if you camp mostly in the dirtier/sandier places.

*Vinyl is cold in winter and slick for pets and people to walk on.

*Laminate and ceramic look wonderful, are easy to clean but are much harder for old joints and pets to walk on.

Our choice would be to put down a good quality vinyl in the form of self stick planks or tiles from the entry door to the bedroom entrance then put down thick washable rugs over rubber skid resistant material to prevent falls and keep the floor softer and warmer.

berber carpet is continuous filament. that means when you get a snag, it will ravel. not the best material for the doghouse as the backing will show on outside edge

Like I said a high end made berber carpet will work great. You pay for what you get.
Berber also comes in a radum cut pile.

I ripped out my carpeting and put in allure flooring. The laminate is nice but doesnt repel water as good as the vinyl stuff. The allure is pretty easy to work with and cut around all the corners. I just finished the flooring in my unit yesterday.

Have you considered a product like Traffic Master Cermica? It's sold at Home Depot. Several advantages of this product over other types of flooring. It's a flexible, vinyl product in a thin, 12" tile. Comes in a variety of finishes and pretty cheap. Lasts longer than sheet vinyl. The tiles are self stick then you grout as you would normal tile which makes it waterproof. It's lightweight, the 12" tiles are easier to work with than sheet goods and easy to cut unlike ceramic tile, and tiles can be replaced if damaged unlike sheet goods. It has better thermal quality than ceramic tile. Installed this in a rental we own and it looks just like tile with all the advantages of a vinyl. Pretty happy with the product.

"Allure" vinyl flooring from Home Depot...very easy to install.

X2 on this one. We installed this in our Motorhome a few years back, and have been really pleased with it.

Berber carpet - even the high end - will ravel. I have been in the business for 40+ years, so I know what a continuous filament material will do. You can get berber in nylon, also.

I started in the carpet manufacturing business in 1969 and retired from it in 2009. So I do have some knowledge in how it's made. Yes continous will ravel, but like I said- RANDOM SHEAR- will work fine. Ours is holding up just fine.

Hey everyone,

I just checked back in to hear all your suggestions. I'm up for the task! I like the Allure/home depot and the laminate flooring that would bring me into the 21st century. I was busy this week chipping ugly paint off walls up front and have beautiful sea blue paint. Thanks so much to all...gail

To each his own, but carpet sure feels nice in cold weather country. I got ceramic on our kitchen area and in the winter time it gets real cold to walk around bare footed. Carpet for us in the bed room and living room is a must.

You can add radiant heat mats under your carpet.
