Just because you can fry one or a thousand CD's doesn't mean you're not stressing the Klystron. They don't like being driven into an open load... It's a transmitter...

Just break them and be done.
Why on earth shouldn't I have the right to stress my klystron if I choose to, and just for my own convenience, no less? The original question was: Any easy way to make a CD unreadable? The microwave is a valid solution. OK, there are some negative side effects with the microwave, as well as side effects with cutting and breaking. Now everybody should be able to balance convenience vs. risks and make their own choice.

Thanks to all. I knew all the regular methods but I hoped someone had something I had not thought of, like smearing them with peanut butter or marking with a magic marker.

Ok, I have to ask this....Why do you need to go to all that trouble just to get rid of a CD? Unless you have all of your Porn on them who cares? Do you really think the bad guys are going to go through your trash and dig out your CDs and get your Bank stuff? If you are a Millionare maybe, but us normal folks? What can they get that isn't passworded? People are just too paranoid these days!

I scratch the label side of a CD. One scratch through to the plastic will make it unreadable for most people, a half dozen will make it a problem even for experts in data recovery. This is quick and easy, but is also messy, because if you are doing the job well enough you will have tiny flakes of aluminum all over the place.

Drill some holes in them and then hang them in the back yard to keep the deer away.

Put them in the Microwave for a couple of seconds, then shellac them. They make excellent coasters.

God Bless!
